LOCATING BACKGROUND INFORMATION

When beginning your research, it is often helpful to consult Reference books such as encyclopedias, dictionaries and handbooks.  These may provide background information on your topic,  ideas on how to narrow down or focus your topic,  lists of books and articles to consult for further information, and an overview of current issues of debate or controversy within the field.  Below is a list of selected reference books owned by Ryan Library as well as Internet World Wide Web sites in criminal justice and related fields .  Books listed are located in the Reference Room on the first floor unless otherwise noted.  A few are kept on Reserve and must be requested at the Circulation Desk in the Lobby.

USING THE ONLINE CATALOG TO LOCATE BOOKS (ORION)
To access ORION, click on the blue ORION link above or go to any of the Iona College Libraries web pages and click on any of the ORION links there. Then click on "Library Catalog".

1) ORION contains records for:

Books (both print and electronic)
Print/hardcopy periodical titles (but not articles)
Audiovisual materials
ORION does NOT include articles from journals, magazines or newspapers.

2) There are many types of searches available in ORION, including keyword anywhere(this is the default search),
title, exact, author, keyword,, subject and more. If you know the item you are looking for, you may search for it by using Author or Title, Exact commands.
e.g. Colson, Charles W (author search)
e.g. Justice that restores (Left anchored title search)

Ignore initial articles "a" "an" and "the" (and foreign language equivalents) when searching by title.
3) If you wish to search by topic, it is helpful to begin with a keyword search. As you view records (look at detailed view) you will see subject headings. If any of the subject headings you see is of interest, you may click on it to find more publications on the topic.

4)  Examples of ORION searches:

Author Search, e.g.  Colson, Charles W
(use format lastname, firstname, or lastname)

Title Search, e.g.  Justice that restores
(do not include initial articles "a", "an", or "the" or their foreign language equivalents).

Subject Search,
e.g. criminal justice
e.g. Hoover, J. Edgar (for books about J. Edgar Hoover)
(for additional subject headings, consult Library of Congress Subject Headings, available in the Reference and
Periodical Rooms. Note that countries, states, and other places may be used as subjects, as well as names of
companies and organizations, e.g. texas  e.g. United States. Drug Enforcement Administration )

Keyword Relevance Search,
e.g. +crime +punishment [records must include both words.  Words need not be next to each other]
e.g. "crime prevention" [phrase search; words must be adjacent to each other]
Keyword Anywhere allows use of boolean operators "and", "or", and "not". Examples:
crime and women  [records contain both words]
crime or women  [records containing either word or both words will be retrieved]
crime not women  [records contain the first word but not the second]

Call Number Search, e.g. 364  [records for books which have call numbers beginning with 364. Books will be listed in
the order in which they appear on the shelves]

The ORION online catalog contains records for many copyrighted and public-domain electronic books including criminal justice and law titles. To see if electronic access is available for any book in ORION, you may click on the "linked resources" button which appears at the top of the record. If a blue-underlined url appears, the publication is available electronically and you may simply click on it. This will take you directly to the online book!

Many of the records for electronic books in ORION list the call number as NetLibrary. Again, simply click on the "linked resources" button which appears at the top of the record, and then on the url which appears. ORION also includes records for U.S. government publications which often include a link to the electronic version.

LOCATING PERIODICALS IN PAPER COPY AND MICROFORM

1)  To locate journals, magazines, or newspapers in paper copy or microform,  you may go to the REFERENCE ROOM or the PERIODICALS ROOM of Ryan Library, both on the 1st floor.  Periodicals and newspapers which are published in the current year are kept in the Reference RoomOlder issues are kept in the Periodicals Room. Periodicals in the fields of computer science, communication arts (including journalism, broadcasting, advertising and public relations), and education are located at the Helen Arrigoni Library located on the 2nd floor of Murphy Center.

2)  To determine if Iona's libraries own a particular journal, magazine, or newspaper in paper copy or microform, consult the IONA COLLEGE LIBRARIES PERIODICALS LIST which is available in gray looseleaf binders in the Reference Room and the Periodicals Room. Look up the title of the journal, magazine, or newspaper you are interested in, to see if the library owns it. The list also indicates what dates the library owns for each periodical (holdings information). Note: If a periodical title is preceded by two asterisks (**) that periodical is kept at the Helen Arrigoni Library.

You may also use ORION to determine if the library owns a particular periodical in paper copy or microform.  If you want to search for a specific periodical, you may do a title search, e.g. harvard business review.  If you want to search for business periodicals in general, you may do a keyword relevance search in ORION, e.g. +"criminal justice" +periodicals
If your search retrieves more than one record, click on the line number which appears before the periodical title or the periodical title itself which you are interested in. Note holdings information, which tells you exactly what volumes and dates the library owns.

3) Many journals are now available in electronic full-text or even full-image.
To find out if a journal, magazine, or newspaper is available full-text or full-image, check the Journal Finder from the main Find Journal Article Research page.
Simply type in the name of the publication you are interested in the box provided, and click on the gray search button.
If available electronically, you will see a list of one or more of our databases which provide the full-text/full-image as well as dates of coverage. You may then click on the database name directly, to access the publication.
