If your topic is listed in Classical and Medieval Literature, Twentieth Century Literary Criticism, Contemporary Literary Criticism, or Contemporary Authors - get the volume number and locate it in the Ryan Reference Room. 3) Print Indexes You may also want to use the print indexes listed below. Most are located in alphabetical order on the first two shelves in the Periodicals Room (to the right and behind the main Circulation Desk in Ryan). These indexes are particularly useful when searching for references to older articles published before the early 1980s, which are often not available in electronic databases. Iona College Libraries: Help: Citing Sources Bibliography - A listing of citations to articles, books, etc. for a specific topic or subject, or for a paper. Citation - A description of an article or book--title, author, publisher, etc.--which allows you to then find the item. Concordance - A book which alphabetically lists the location of words found in books, plays, etc. by an author. For example, by using a concordance to Shakespeare you could discover where in each play he uses the word "rain," maybe in order to determine if the word and its context has a special meaning. Index - Gives citations to material found in many sources (usually journal articles). While print indexes are still important for finding older material, most indexes are now online in electronic databases. Serial - Any publication (journal, magazine, newspaper, periodical) that is published on a regular and reoccuring basis. Need more help?
