Online Books

An electronic version of a book or play may be useful for doing keyword searching of the text. The following websites have significant amounts of free electronic texts. Books freely available on the web are normally out of copyright (appx. before 1923 and are usually by more famous authors).

Finding Books and Other Items

To access ORION (Iona's online catalog), go to the Library's Webpage, and click Find Books & Multimedia under the Research category.

There are many types of searches available in ORION, including "Keyword Anywhere" (this is the default search), "Title, Exact," "Author Browse," "Subject Browse," and more. If you know the item you are looking for, you may search for it by using "Author Browse" or "Title, Exact" commands,
e.g. Joyce, James (Author Browse)
e.g. Dubliners (Title, Exact)

*Do not include any initial articles "a" "an" or "the" (and foreign language equivalents) when searching by title.

If you wish to search by topic, it is helpful to begin with a "Keyword Anywhere" search. To combine keywords in the default "Keyword Anywhere" search, you must use and, or, not, or quotation marks, to link words together. As you view item records, look at list of Subjects, you may click on it to find more items on the topic. Alternatively, once you find a book you like, you will probably find similar books nearby in the book stacks. Books beginning with an "800" call number (like those on literature) can be found on the second floor of Ryan Library.

If you item you want is not in Iona's collection, consider searching other local or national library catalogs which are also available from the Books & Multimedia page of the libraries' website. You can requests books and articles not available at Iona through Interlibrary Loan/Document Delivery.

Finding Poems, Plays, & Short Stories

Finding these items may be difficult since they are often located inside larger anthologies, and are not always listed in the record in our ORION book catalog. If a keyword search of the item's title does not produce any results in ORION, the following sources may help.

In our ORION Online Catalog enter the title of your work in quotation marks and do a Keyword Search (not a Title Search.)

Library Terminology

Bibliography - A listing of citations to articles, books, etc. for a specific topic or subject, or for a paper.

Citation - A description of an article or book--title, author, publisher, etc.--which allows you to then find the item.

Concordance - A book which alphabetically lists the location of words found in books, plays, etc. by an author. For example, by using a concordance to Shakespeare you could discover where in each play he uses the word "rain," maybe in order to determine if the word and its context has a special meaning.

Index - Gives citations to material found in many sources (usually journal articles). While print indexes are still important for finding older material, most indexes are now online in electronic databases.

Serial - Any publication (journal, magazine, newspaper, periodical) that is published on a regular and reoccuring basis.
