Health Care Administration Research Guide
An Introduction to Library Research Strategy
LOCATING BACKGROUND INFORMATION IN THE REFERENCE ROOM The Reference Room, located on the 1st floor of Ryan Library, contains materials such as health care and medical encyclopedias, dictionaries, handbooks, directories, and bibliographies. These publications provide background information on health care administration and related topics including overviews, historical information, names of authorities or experts in the field and controversial issues within the field. By reading articles in encyclopedias and other reference books, you may get ideas for research paper topics as well as ideas for narrowing down a broad topic.
All books are located in the Ryan Library Reference Room unless otherwise stated. Note that some of these publications are kept on reserve. Reserve publications should be requested at the Main Desk in the first-floor lobby. (These books help you format the bibliography or list of "Works Cited" at the end of your term paper, as well as references within the paper) American Psychological Association. Find Books in the ORION Online Catalog (ORION SEARCH) To access ORION, click on the ORION link above or go to
any of the Libraries' homepage and click "Find
Books and Multimedia" under Research Tools. Then choose "Basic
Search" or one of the other categories listed. Books Ignore initial articles "a" "an" and "the" (and foreign language equivalents)
when searching by title. For example, if the title of a book is "A
History of health care administration", you would type "history
of health care administration" in the search box.
While searching ORION you will probably notice that many of the books
on your topic have similar call numbers. It may also be helpful to browse
the library shelves under these frequently used call number areas. Below
are just a few call number areas you may wish to browse. Books
with call numbers listed below may be found in the Reference Room,
1st floor; and also in the 3rd floor South Wing.
When searching ORION by "subject" search, you must use topics listed in the Library of Congress Subject Headings. Headings beginning with "Health", "Medical care", etc. Below are just
a few examples of terms which may be used as subject headings.
Terms indicating professionals in the field. For example:
Names of people (in format lastname firstname; you may input lastname
alone if it is distinctive)
Issues of interest in health care. For example:
Return to Top of Page Find Journal Articles in Electronic Databases Need articles from journals, magazines or newspapers? Iona College Libraries provides access to literally millions of articles in our subscription electronic databases. Frequently, these databases provide the full-text and often full-image for these articles. Periodicals included in our databases are high-quality reputable publications which are also published in paper copy. For a complete listing of electronic datasbases for Healthcare Administration see: http://www.iona.edu/library/online/databases/health.htm ABI/INFORM Global (via ProQuest) includes the full-text/ full-image for many articles from health care administration and other business journals and periodicals Business Source Elite (via ProQuest) is another database which provides full-text/full-image for many articles from health care administration journals as well as other business journals and periodicals. Health & Wellness Resource Center (Infotrac). This database includes the full-text of many journal articles. It also includes the full-text of reference books and an Alternative Health Module. PubMed (includes MEDLINE) is the most comprehensive electronic database in the field of medicine. It's emphasis is on clinical medicine and health. It contains abstracts of articles published in scholarly medical journals, with some links to full-text. CQ Researcher provides the full-text of the print periodical "CQ Researcher" issued by Congressional Quarterly, Inc. An excellent full-text source of articles on a variety of current events and controversial issues, especially those dealt with by Congress. In "Quick Search" box, try typing in words such as "health", "medical", "medicine", "managed care", "health insurance", etc. Other helpful databases you may wish to consult include: Locating Individual Journal Titles through the Library From the library's homepage click on "Find Journal Articles & E-Resources," then on "Access articles from a specific Journal Title" under the "Know the Name of a Journal?" section. Type the name of the journal, magazine, or newspaper in the space provided. The results will indicate if the title is available (in electronic OR print) and years it is available. If a journal is available in "Iona College Libraries Print/Microform Collection" click the link to see which years the journal is available in print. In Ryan Library, current print periodicals are located in the Reference Room. Earlier periodicals are bound and located in the Periodicals Room. Computer Science, Mass Communication, and Education periodicals are housed at the Helen Arrigoni Library. Print Article Indexes
