Overview

Iona College Libraries has expanded its efforts to provide specialized library instruction through implementation of new instructional service intiatives. These initiatives are guided by the mission of the Instructional Services Program.

Mission of the Instructional Services Program

To support the larger mission of the Library and Iona College through library instruction which enables students to:

Develop basic information research and assessment skills which they will utilize throughout their lives.
Critically evaluate information based on sound criteria.
Competently use information technology.
Adapt to new and changing information technology.

Through specific course objectives students will be able to:

Analyze a topic and identify key concepts.
Formulate a successful search strategy.
Understand and use controlled vocabulary and thesauri.
Select and use appropriate print and electronic research tools for their particular assignment/discipline.
Critically evaluate sources regarding their relevancy, authority, accuracy, objectivity, content, and currency.
Integrate these information literacy concepts and skills into their academic experience and apply them to a field of study.

Regularly scheduled library instruction will be offered to all students, faculty and staff.

Students also have the opportunity to participate in our Research Assistance Program (RAP). This program allows them to meet one-on-one with a reference librarian to discuss his/her course-specific research.
