Graphic Design Style Guidelines

Graphic Standards

The graphic standards identity system was designed to enhance the Iona image via consistent and cohesive messaging. The proper application of these elements is important to further establishing and reinforcing the Iona brand.

A clear graphic identity for the College:

  • ensures printed materials are congruent with the current advertising campaign and image;
  • helps build brand recognition – readers can quickly identify Iona in publications;
  • avoids confusion from having different logos among the many departments and programs on campus;
  • provides cohesiveness across various marketing materials including the website; and
  • enhances the College’s image.

This information is intended for all those on (and off) campus who produce publications. It applies to the production of:

  • brochures, pamphlets and circulars;
  • newsletters, flyers and posters;
  • news releases;
  • web page; and
  • other publications that represent Iona College.

You are encouraged to consult with the Office of College Communications whenever possible before initiating a print project (view our publications procedures).

Please note: some elements are mandatory for inclusion in all printed materials, and others can be used to accentuate design. We prefer that you utilize the downloadable images provided, rather than re-create logo or typeface, and that you always be conscious not to distort the proportions of the images if resizing.

Mandatory Design Elements

Iona Logo block (a.k.a. "drop box")

Usage
The Iona block is used on the cover of all collateral pieces, as well as tactical and image advertising, business cards, letterhead, and more. The font used for the word “ IONA” is Albertan. It must be set in ALL CAPS. The letter spacing can vary from minus 5 pts. to plus 2 pts.

Positioning
The Iona logo/dropbox:

  • should never be “free-floating”;
  • is most often positioned at the top of printed materials, flush to the right and left edges of the space. Top left and right edges can bleed off when applicable.
  • can be rotated 90 degrees or –90 degrees.
  • must be set in black or the College’s maroon (PMS 201on uncoated paper or PMS 202 on coated paper).

No other colors are ever used for the block and type always knocks out to white. Please be sure to maintain the proportions of the block if re-sizing.

Additional Publication Elements

Iona Tagline

Celebrating 200 years of Christian Brothers’ Education.
This tag-line represents the heritage of Iona College and is an integral part of the College’s messaging. It should be included in all publications. It is usually printed in small, italic type-face at the base of the cover or front of printed item.

Mission Statement
All major publications must include at least the first line of the Iona College Mission Statement, which reads as follows:
“Iona is a college in the tradition of the Christian Brothers and American Catholic higher education.”

A similar version is also acceptable:
“Iona is a college dedicated to teaching in the tradition of the Christian Brothers and American Catholic education.”

Contact information
It is encouraged that all communication vehicles provide some contact information for the reader. There are specific guidelines to how this information is presented. It includes the College name, address, phone and web site address.

Fonts
There are primarily two PostScript fonts that Iona uses in its printed materials.
Albertan - Iona logo/dropbox and tagline: Celebrating 200 Years of Christian Brothers’ Education.
Garamond Italic - Headline treatment in all image advertising.

If you do not have any of the appropriate typefaces, you can download an EPS of the Iona College type elements to assure continuity with the Iona style.

Colors
The official Iona College color is Maroon in either PMS 201 (uncoated stock) or PMS 202 (coated stock). In addition, black, white, grey and gold can be used, but not for the logo.

Again, it is important to stress that the application of color is rigid in advertisements, whereas it is more loosely applied in creative, print publications and collateral materials. Please contact the Director of College Communications if you require the CMYK equivalent of the PMS maroon.

Optional Identity Elements

Iona Crest
The Iona Crest is an optional element, and application of it is more flexible than the actual logo/dropbox. The crest is typically printed anywhere between 20-60% black, depending on publication. For example, in newspapers it is printed at 40% to 60% black. The image can be vertical, rotated, or cropped into. The words Iona College should never be cut off when using only a portion of the seal.

The use of the crest in print ads and goodwill ads is less flexible than that of all other collateral pieces. The crest should be used at 45 degree slant, Iona College name should always show, and it should be in 20-40% black.

All other collateral: the use of the crest in all other printed materials is a bit more flexible. It can be printed in black, white, grey, PMS 201 or 202, etc. Other background color can show, though.
