Opera Performance: The Yellow Star: a little light dispels great darkness
Tuesday, October 28, 7:30 pm – The Christopher J. Murphy Auditorium
70th Anniversary of Kristallnacht Commemoration. The Yellow Star: a little light dispels great darkness is an English-language, concert-style opera celebrating extraordinary acts by ordinary people. Composer/librettist Bradley Detrick brings to life the little-known story of how the Danish people miraculously conspired to save nearly all of the Danish Jews just as the Nazis were coming to take them to concentration camps in 1943. This production transports the audience to Denmark during the height of World War II, and into the lives of ordinary people as they grapple with the world crumbling around them. The libretto, a fictional account based on true events, centers around an ensemble of characters that make the difficult choices to act righteously and these seemingly small actions, combined with those of others, ultimately save so many. Holocaust survivor William Donat will deliver opening remarks. The production will feature performers from the Metropolitan Opera and New York City Opera companies. A reception with the composer and performers will follow. Please visit the opera’s official website for more information. The performance is being presented by the Brother John G. Driscoll Professorship in Jewish-Catholic Studies and is co-sponsored by the Iona College Council on the Arts through the generosity of JoAnn and Joseph M. Murphy and the Baron Lambert Fund.

Arthur Dimmesdale (patient) and "Dr" Roger Chillingworth in Nathaniel Hawthorne's 'The Scarlett Letter' " at the Second Annual Conference of the Society of Humanistic Psychology of the American Psychological Association, in Boston on August 13. Dr. Stern also presented a paper at the APA Convention on the conflicting roles of the psychotherapist in assisted physician suicide. At the Association's Convention, Dr. Stern was presented (with the late Dr. Myron Arons of West Georgia University) with the initial Lifetime Achievement Award which in subsequent years will be named after Professors Arons and Stern.
