Professional Activities

McGraw-Hill has recently published Paul Beaudin's, PhD, Education, Treasures and Gospel Values, (2nd edition). This teacher resource material is distributed to the thousands of faith-based schools throughout the country who use the McGraw-Hill reading series, Treasures. It helps teachers to embed Christian spirituality into children's literature. Beaudin was also the keynote speaker for the annual professional conference day for 200 teachers of the Saddle Brook (NJ) Public Schools on January 18. He addressed the K-12 group of teachers and administrators on the Essential Elements of a Learning Community. Beaudin contends that in addition to high expectations of every student, respectful adult communication with all stakeholders, especially the students, is the greatest priority for developing true learning communities.

On behalf of Iona College Libraries, Callie Bergeris gave a presentation, "What College Research Is Like," to over 100 seniors at Yonkers International Baccalaureate High School this past December. She shared what faculty expect from students on the college level, what scholarly journals are, and the difference between library subscription databases and internet resources retrieved by search engines such as Google. Bergeris also showed them ways to search the internet more effectively.

George Bournoutian's, PhD, History, last book A Brief History of the Aghuank Region received a favorable review in the December 11 issue of Times Literary Supplement of London. This is the seventh book of Bournoutian's to be reviewed by the TLS. Bournoutian has also published an article on Armenian historiography and a book review of Iran and Armenia at the Crossroads of History in the latest issue of the Journal of the Society for Armenian Studies.

Jack Breslin, PhD, Mass Communication, wrote a review of Robert Phelps' God and the editor: My search for meaning at The New York Times for the Journal of Mass Media Ethics.

James T. Carroll, CFC, PhD
, History, presented a paper titled "Miner's Canary: Indigenous Education in the United States and Australia," at the 2010 Hawaii International Conference on Arts and Humanities, Honolulu, Hawaii on January 14.

Robert E. Novak, CFC, PhD, Physics, delivered an invited lecture at ASTROBIO2010, an interdisciplinary workshop held in Santiago, Chile (January 13-15) at the United Nations Commission for the Economic Development of Latin America (CEPAL). The title of his lecture was "Probing Planetary Atmospheres through Infrared Astronomy: Finding Conditions Supporting Life." Drs. Michael Mumma and Geronimo Villanueva of NASA were co-authors. The workshop was sponsored by several groups including NASA, the European Southern Observatory, and the United Nations.

Michael Pregot, PhD, Education, discussed how a college partnership can reduce the high school drop-out rate at the National Alternative Education Conference sponsored by Ferris University in San Antonio, TX on January 20. He discussed two initiatives that Iona College and the education department have embarked upon in recent years. Project Create offers alternative options for New Rochelle public schools students who have not fared well in their traditional setting and the Professional Development School Partnership with Rice High School. The partnership offers dual secondary / collegiate credit for students currently who excel in their current school program. He has also been offered a membership seat on the National Alternative Education Executive Board in 2010.

Malissa A. Scheuring-Leipold, EdD, Education Department, had a piece published in the Sunday, January 17 edition of The Journal News (Westchester edition), Education Outlook section, entitled "Laying It On the Line: Local Faculty Offer Their Own College Advice to Freshman," where she discussed the importance of effective communication and decision-making.
