Iona College Conference on Intellectual Property
Call for submissions - Deadline: Thursday, February 25
Selected essays will be published in a proposed collection for a peer-reviewed press. Five hundred word papers/panel abstracts or complete papers should be submitted by today to Shannon Donlon. Women's Studies Program
Monday, March 1 marks the beginning of Women's History Month. Chaired by Cathryn Lavery, PhD, Criminal Justice, the calendar of events features a rich array of programs under the theme of Women as Advocates and Survivors. Several highlights of the month include a production of Herstory by Key Arts Productions, a keynote address by Amy Paulin, New York State Assembly - 88th District, Opening Gallery Exhibition of "Family Matters," a screening of Missing followed by a Q and A with journalist Charles Horman's widow, Joyce Horman and actor John Shea, a production of Third a play by Wendy Wasserstein with post performance discussion, Student's Scholars Conference, and a live performance by Vicci Martinez (Outstanding Folk / Country Song 2009), and so much more. If you have seen a shooting star, you have seen a tiny cosmic collision: a tiny bit of an asteroid or comet burning up in Earth's atmosphere. But large cosmic collisions can have catastrophic consequences (like the extinction of the dinosaurs, or the city-sized devastation in Tunguska in 1908). Dr. Heidi B. Magbana Drum & Dance NYC is a multicultural performance group of percussionists and dancers, who will demonstrate how traditional Guinean drum rhythms and dance interrelate. Magbana's performance fuses world percussion with traditional African drum and dance rhythms, martial arts and contemporary dance.

Iona Team at NYSSA-Investment Research Challenge
Peter Freeman, Christopher Holland, Anthony Iodice, David Nirchi, and John Politi, members of the Iona Team, participated in the (by invitation only) 8th Annual Investment Research Challenge organized by the New York Society of Security Analysts (NYSSA). The team presented its analysis on Bitstream Corporation in front of a panel of experts on Friday, February 5, at the NYSSA headquarters. The Finance Department Faculty who mentored the team extends their congratulations to the participants.
New developments for MA Program in Industrial-Organizational Psychology
The MA program in Industrial-Organizational Psychology has established relationships with I-O and HR professionals in various corporate and non-profit organizations, in an effort to develop internship opportunities for I-O students. So far Iona students have been placed at the following: IBM, Madison Square Garden, NYC Metropolitan Transportation Authority, Fendi (corporate), Tommy Hilfiger (corporate), Montefiore Medical Center and Sound Shore Medical Center, as well as other small to mid-size companies and non-profit agencies.
Supervisors at these companies have given Iona interns high performance ratings for professionalism, ethical awareness, effective communication with co-workers and clients/customers, etc. During debriefing conversations with these students, they expressed the great value an internship has given them and some have reported receiving job offers from their internship sites.
LAMPcafe Outreach
Malissa Scheuring-Leipold, PhD, Education, invites students and faculty to serve the less fortunate through the LAMPcafe - a mobile canteen street outreach - sponsored by LAMP Ministries, a Catholic lay missionary association. It brings simple food to the homeless on the streets of the Bronx. The LAMPcafe serves on Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday 10:30 am -1:00 pm and Saturday from 10:15 am - 12:30 pm. Volunteers are specifically needed on the first, third and fifth Saturday of every month. Contact Dr. Scheuring-Leipold at ext. 2553 if you are interested or would like to serve by donating snack foods or sandwiches.
Weekday Mass
Weekday Mass is celebrated Monday through Thursday at noon in the Blessed Edmund Rice Chapel. All are invited.
Library Instruction Class
Would you like your students to know how to find quality information for research assignments and be more aware of library resources and services? Schedule a library instruction class! Classes may be taught for any discipline, undergraduate or graduate. Librarians will work with you to plan a class relevant to your students needs. Classes may be taught in the library or elsewhere at New Rochelle and Rockland campuses. Learning in Retirement at Iona College (LIRIC) Offering Courses
LIRIC offers courses and social activities for people of retirement age. LIRIC meets Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays at the Elks Lodge, 19 The Boulevard, New Rochelle. TaxPayer Assistance Program
The Hagan School of Business will offer free tax payer assistance to the community for basic short or long form personal income tax filing. The dates are March 6, 13 and 27 and April 10. The time is 9:00 am to noon in the Hagan Lower Level Computer Lab. Clients will be seen on a first come first serve basis. For further inquiry please call the Accounting department at ext. 2267.
The Library Challenge
If you haven't donated to The Library Challenge, now is the time. All donors to the campus campaigns, Visions of Excellence and The Library Challenge, are invited to a celebratory luncheon on Tuesday, March 23. During the luncheon, round trip airline tickets for anywhere in the United States will be raffled off. Winners will have to be in attendance.
For those who would like to make a gift to The Library Challenge, payroll deduction is an easy and seamless way to make a pledge over one or two years. Those donors who contribute $1,000 or more will be listed on a donor plaque in the library. The Library Challenge will enable Iona to completely upgrade and renovate all of Ryan Library. New Vending Machines (CC Vending) on Campus
As you travel between buildings, please notice the new soda, water and snack machines. There are also three venues: Doorley, Ground Floor; Hagan Hall and McSpedon Hall, Ground Floor; with fresh food vending machines. These machines offer fresh salads, sandwiches, yogurts, muffins and bagels. If you encounter any difficulties with the vending machines please contact Business Services at ext. 2122.

Special Presentations during Commencement
All faculty and administrators who have children graduating from Iona in May have the opportunity to present these students their diplomas during the 2010 Commencement ceremony at Madison Square Garden. If you have a child that will march in the 2010 Commencement ceremony, please notify Tresmaine Grimes, PhD, AVP for Academic Affairs, by April 23. Please include the graduate's name, school, degree, and the name of the presenter in an e-mail and send to tgrimes@iona.edu.
Commencement: Time Change
The time for the Commencement ceremonies at WaMu Theater at Madison Square Garden has been changed to 11:00 am on Sunday, May 16.
All faculty, administrators and staff members participating in the Commencement ceremonies must order academic regalia online at www.jostens.com/college. The deadline for ordering is March 7.
Jack Breslin, PhD, Mass Communication, wrote a chapter entitled "Cops and Reality: Public Service or Public Menace?" for the book Ethics and Entertainment: Essays on Media Culture and Media Morality published by MacFarland & Company.
William Gratzer, EdD, and James Carpenter, EdD, Mathematics, had their article, "A Classroom Note on the Vees of a Function," published in the winter 2010 issue of Mathematics and Computer Science Education.
Pauline Jirik-Babb, PhD, Psychology, presented a paper at the 38th Annual Meeting of the International Neuropsychological Society in Acapulco, Mexico, February 3-7. The paper was entitled "Cognitive Neuropsychology of Spatial Processing."
Frank A. Salamone, PhD, Sociology, published an article titled "Christmas at the Freed Slaves' Home," In the December 2009 issue of the International Journal of Development. The article describes the celebration of the holiday in the Freed Slaves' Home in Northern Nigeria run by the Sudan United Mission for young children freed from slavery in the early 20th Century by the British.
