Women's History Month Events
March 1 marked the beginning of Women's History Month. Chaired by Cathryn Lavery, PhD, Criminal Justice, the calendar of events features a rich array of programs under the theme of Women as Advocates and Survivors. Several highlights of the rest of the month include a production of Third a play by Wendy Wasserstein with post performance discussion, Student's Scholars Conference, and a live performance by Vicci Martinez (Outstanding Folk / Country Song 2009), and so much more.

Student Wins Third Prize
at 42nd Annual Metropolitan
Association of College and
University Biologists Conference

Senior Courtney Peloso, under the mentorship of Teresa D'Aversa, PhD, won third prize at the MACUB conference. Faculty and student members of the Biology Department presented their research at the MACUB. The conference was held at Kingsborough Community College, Brooklyn, NY on October 24. Peloso presented a poster titled, "Myelin Basic Protein Stimulates Chemokine Secretion in Human Astrocytes: Importance in the Pathogenesis of Multiple Sclerosis." She won third place for "Excellent Poster Presentation." Eric Muller, PhD, also gave a poster presentation highlighting student research by seniors Carlee Street, Suzanne Baldissard, and Mark Monzone on calcium signaling in yeast, and Yourha Kang, PhD, gave a poster presentation highlighting student research by Marissa Sansone '09 on the population genetics of butterflyweed. Along with Peloso,  juniors Heather Cleaver, Madeline Cimino, Garner Soltes, and freshman Nousin Haque were in attendance.

Dance Concert: Magbana Drum & Dance NYC

Magbana Drum & Dance NYC is a multicultural performance group of percussionists and dancers, who will demonstrate how traditional Guinean drum rhythms and dance interrelate. This high-energy performance will describe the cultural contexts in which music and dance co-exist. Magbana's performance fuses world percussion with traditional African drum and dance rhythms, martial arts and contemporary dance.

The Berry Forum: Opening to The Great Work of Our Time
(An Earth Day Convocation)

Exploring the Vision and Challenge of Thomas Berry Thomas Berry (1914 - 2009) wrote about the human relationship with Earth and the universe with unrivalled perception, intelligence and grace, articulating a new spirituality that integrates the evolutionary perspectives of science with wisdom drawn from sacred traditions. His work stands as a major contribution to the development of an emerging ecological civilization in which the human fully recognizes and integrates with the Earth community. The Iona Spirituality Institute dedicates the entire Spring 2010 season to the celebration of Thomas Berry's legacy in a variety of offerings: a film series, courses by two of his students, Brian Brown, PhD, JD, and Kathleen Deignan, CND, PhD, and other programs intended to explore his vision and challenge. "The Berry Series Session II: Finding a Way Forward to the Ecological Age" presented by Daniel Martin, PhD. Whose doctoral work was directed by Thomas Berry.

Employee Information

TaxPayer Assistance Program
The Hagan School of Business offers taxpayer assistance to the community for basic short or long form personal income tax filing. The remaining dates are March 13, 27 and April 10. The time is 9:00 am to noon in the Hagan Lower Level Computer Lab. Clients will be seen on a first come first serve basis. For further inquiry, please call the Accounting department at ext. 2267.

The Library Challenge
If you haven't donated to The Library Challenge, now is the time. All donors to the campus campaigns, Visions of Excellence and The Library Challenge, are invited to a celebratory luncheon on Tuesday, March 23. During the luncheon, round trip airline tickets for anywhere in the United States will be raffled off. Winners will have to be in attendance.

For those who would like to make a gift to The Library Challenge, payroll deduction is an easy and seamless way to make a pledge over one or two years. Those donors who contribute $1,000 or more will be listed on a donor plaque in the library. The Library Challenge will enable Iona to completely upgrade and renovate all of Ryan Library. Special Presentations during Commencement
All faculty and administrators who have children graduating from Iona in May have the opportunity to present these students their diplomas during the 2010 Commencement ceremony at Madison Square Garden. If you have a child that will march in the 2010 Commencement ceremony, please notify Tresmaine Grimes, PhD, AVP for Academic Affairs, by April 23. Please include the graduate's name, school, degree, and the name of the presenter in an e-mail and send to tgrimes@iona.edu.

Professional Activities

Sunghee Lee, PhD, Chemistry, was published in Langmuir. The article, titled "Effect of Specific Anion on Templated Crystal Nucleation at the Liquid-Liquid Interface" (published February 17), was co-authored by Iona undergraduate students; junior Paul Sanstead, junior Joseph Wiener, senior Remon Bebawee, and alum Aileen Hilario '09. The article describes an advance in understanding the nature of anions at interfaces, which will assist crystal engineers in controlling key steps in crystallization.

Christopher Perricone, PhD, Philosophy, "Tragedy: a lesson in survival" was published in The Journal of Aesthetic Education, Vol.44, # 1, Spring, 2010. University of Illinois Press.

Michael Pregot, EdD, Education, and Brother Michael Segvich, Head of School, Rice High School, will be presenting their joint findings on steps that have been established in developing a successful partnership at the PDS National Conference, March 11-13 in Orlando Florida. The title of their session is "What's In It For Me?" and will focus on how professional support positions beyond the classroom also benefit in the school partnership from the interactions of the two institutions.

Frank Salamone, PhD, Sociology, published "Religion and the Baby Boomer" in the book Baby Boom: People and Perspectives, Rusty Monhollon, Ed. Santa Barbara: ABC-CLIO, 2010, pp.105-115.
