CELTIC Congratulates 2009-2010 Grants and Awards Recipients!
The Center for the Enhancement of Learning and Teaching (CELTIC) is pleased to congratulate and announce CELTIC 2009-2010 Awards recipients! CELTIC Excellence in Teaching Awards were presented to Nancy-Jo Johnson, PhD, Mass Communication; Tricia Mulligan, PhD, Political Science and International Studies; and Amy Stackhouse, PhD, English. CELTIC Faculty Instructional Technology Awards were presented to Jeffrey Alstete, EdD, Management and Business Administration, and James T. Carroll, CFC, PhD, History.

CELTIC faculty awards have been established to support projects that promote teaching effectiveness and improve student learning. Benefits Open Enrollment Period
An annual enrollment period began for full-time employees interested in enrolling in the following plans: the Flexible Spending Account, Empire BlueCross BlueShield, HIP Health Insurance or Aetna dental. The open enrollment will continue through Friday, December 4. Please contact Rosemary Bartolomeo at ext. 2049 for additional information.

Accounts Payable Checks/Payments Schedule for December
The last day the Accounts Payable checks/payments will be issued before the Christmas break, will be Tuesday, December 15.
Should you require a check/payment to be processed before the break, it will be necessary to submit the invoices and/or check requests to the Accounts Payable department by Friday, December 11.

Annual Blessing of the creche and Christmas tree lighting
Members of the College community gathered December 2 for the annual blessing of the campus creche and Christmas tree lighting. The Iona Singers set the mood with their harmonizing and Father Frank Dixon, O.Carm performed the blessings. If you missed it this year, plan to attend next year. It is a nice way to kick off the holiday season on campus.

Classical Music: Westchester Chamber Orchestra
Saturday, December 12, 8:00 pm - The Christopher J. Murphy Auditorium
In addition to featuring a selection of Baroque music, the WCO, under the direction of Barry Charles Hoffman, will perform works by JS Bach. Violinist Alex Abayev is featured in JS Bach's Concerto No. 1 in A minor, BWV 1041, and Brandenburg Concerto No. 5 BWV 1050, in D major. $40 general admission; $35 senior citizens; free to Iona College community.

In honor of the Feast of the Immaculate Conception, the prayer service will center on the theme, "Edmund and Mary, the Mother of God." Regina Plunkett-Dowling, PhD, director of Mission Integration, will lead the service. The monthly Friends of Edmund gathering enables Iona community members to reflect on the life and example of Blessed Edmund Rice, Founder of the Christian Brothers. All are invited to attend. Student Development Holiday Boutique

Sunday Advent Masses
The Iona Community is invited to celebrate Advent Sunday masses at 7:00 pm in the Arrigoni Center on December 6 and December 13. Families are always welcome. Immediately following these Masses, student clubs and organizations host refreshments.

Books to Soldiers!
Help us brighten a soldier's day by donating new and gently used books to be shipped to our military bases overseas. Ryan Libray and CELTIC are collecting novels and popular topics paperback and hardback books for Christmas delivery. Ardsley High School freshman Jamie Stein has imagined and developed this amazing and valuable project. Please help! Bring your books to the Help Desk in Ryan Library or the CELTIC office. LAMPcafe Outreach
Malissa Scheuring-Leipold, PhD, Education, invites students and faculty to serve the less fortunate through the LAMPcafe - a mobile canteen street outreach - sponsored by LAMP Ministries, a Catholic lay missionary association. It brings simple food to the homeless on the streets of the Bronx. The LAMPcafe serves on Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday 10:30 am -1:00 pm and Saturday from 10:15 am - 12:30 pm. Volunteers are specifically needed on the first, third and fifth Saturday of every month. Contact Dr. Scheuring-Leipold at ext. 2553 if you are interested or would like to serve by donating snack foods or sandwiches.


Faculty 2010 Trip
Costa Rica trip planned for January 4-11, 2010. $1,099 per person double occupancy (does not include airfare). Includes 4-star hotels, breakfasts, tabacon hot springs with dinner, arenal volcano tour, Monteverde Rain Forest tour with zip-lining over tree tops, Tamarindo Beach Resort on the Pacific Coast. Book Drive
Are you overrun by books you no longer need?  Don't throw them away! Bring them to the big bin in the English department. Sigma Tau Delta, the English Honor Society, is collecting books for the charity, Books for Africa. Your used books will be used for a great cause! Books will be collected through the end of the semester.

CELTIC Workshops
CELTIC is offering new hands-on workshops for faculty throughout the spring semester in Ryan Library's new Technology Classroom 201. Topics include: Test Drive Wimba; Faronics Insight Lab Control; APA and MLA Style Changes; What's New in Blackboard and iTunes U at Iona College. Visit the CELTIC site for more information.

Instruction Class
Would you like your students to know how to find quality information for research assignments and be more aware of library resources and services? Schedule a library instruction class! Classes may be taught for any discipline, undergraduate or graduate. Librarians will work with you to plan a class relevant to your students needs. Classes may be taught in the library or elsewhere at New Rochelle and Rockland campuses. Learning in Retirement at Iona College (LIRIC) Offering Courses
LIRIC offers courses and social activities for people of retirement age. LIRIC meets Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays at the Elks Lodge, 19 The Boulevard, New Rochelle. Professional Activities

Jack Breslin, PhD, Mass Communication, moderated a panel "The Exotica, the Personals, the Duke and the Presidents: Bizarre and Sensational Reporting in 19th Century Newspapers" at the Symposium on 19th Century Press, the Civil War and Free Expression, at the University of Tennessee Chattanooga, on November 13. During the panel, he presented his paper "Politics and Private Lives: 19th Century Sensational Coverage of the Presidents."

Mary Barbara Hagerty, PhD, Political Science, presented a paper at the Northeast Political Science Association Conference in Philadelphia, PA, on November 21. Her paper presentation was "Women Lawmakers of New York State: A Different Voice?"

Catherine O'Callaghan, PhD, Education, has been invited to present a paper on "Women in the Academy" for the Oxford Roundtable in March 2010.



Fredrica Rudell, PhD
, Marketing and Meryl Nadel, DSW, ACSW , Social Work, attended the 6th annual meeting of the Environmental Consortium of Hudson Valley Colleges & Universities held at Vassar College on November 13-14.  The theme of the conference was "Teaching and Learning the Hudson Valley:  Building Capacity for Place-Based Education."  They both participated in a Roundtable session on "Sustainability Across the Curriculum." Dr. Rudell described her experience teaching a Green Marketing course and offered tips and suggestions regarding course content, format, resources, and assignments. Dr. Nadel described a Social Work course module she has developed involving a walking tour of the downtown/riverfront area of Yonkers which enables students to examine the relationship between people and their natural, built and social environments

Frank A. Salamone, PhD had a chapter reprinted: "The Depiction of Masculinity in Classic Nigerian Literature," Bloom's Modern Critical Interpretations: Things Fall Apart, New Edition. New York Chelsea Publishers, 2009, pp. 141-152.
