Iona's Mock Trial Team Rises in National Ranking
Even within a rebuilding year, the mock trial team rose 19 ranking spots to become ranked 102 out of 603 teams in the country on the national level. Iona's team is now the highest ranked single-team program. The year included the team's first ever tournament championship - finishing in first place at the 50-team invitational tournament at UPenn. The team, comprised 50 percent of freshmen, has qualified for the national tournament for the third consecutive year.

The Center for the Enhancement of Learning and Teaching at Iona College announces its 2011 Award Recipients.
2011 CELTIC Excellence in Teaching Awards (CETA): Chia-Ling Tsai, PhD, Computer Science and Eric Muller, PhD, Biology; Kathleen Deignan, CND, PhD, Religious Studies; and Nicholas Beutell, PhD, Management and Business Administration.
2011 CELTIC Faculty Instructional Technology Awards (FITA): Diane Ferrero-Paluzzi, PhD, Speech Communication Studies; and Stanley Lapa, Department of Fine and Performing Arts. Congratulations to all.

Thank You from Books to Soldiers
The Stein family would like to thank all members of the Iona community who have donated to Books to Soldiers this year. Hundreds of books were collected and will be sent to military bases in the tri-state area. Soldiers also take the books with them overseas, and some are distributed to the hospitals and libraries on military bases. Your generous spirit is greatly appreciated. The Center for the Enhancement of Learning and Teaching (CELTIC) at Iona College is pleased to congratulate Tricia Mulligan, PhD, Chair, Political Science and International Studies, for her appointment as Iona’s 2011-2012 Presidential Teaching Scholar.
Dr. Mulligan’s award winning project is entitled: “Internationalizing the Curriculum.” The project seeks to create a model for faculty who are interested in internationalizing the curriculum in their respective classrooms, traditional or otherwise; enrich the content and pedagogical tools of the Political Science and International Studies curriculum; engage students with a wide array of learning styles and through web-based information and technology via Blackboard, Wimba, webinars, video conferencing, and other linkages. More specifically, the project seeks to create a platform that provides students with an opportunity to participate in active learning with students in other countries, and experience first-hand the issues, challenges and processes involved in national and international politics.

Smiljana Petrovic, PhD, Computer Science and Frances Bailie, PhD, Computer Science, participated in a panel discussion entitled, "Untangling the Maze of Pedagogical Strategies in Introductory Programming" at the Sixteenth Annual Consortium for Computing Sciences in Colleges Northeastern Conference. The consortium was held at Western New England College, Springfield, MA on April 16. Drs. Petrovic and Bailie presented various techniques they have used in the classroom to enhance students' understanding of introductory programming. Participants engaged in a lively and informative discussion after the presentation.
Frank Salamone, PhD, Sociology, has been notified that his essay, "Hausa Wrestling in Ibadan as an Ethnic Boundary Marker," appeared in the Journal of Cultural Studies, a Nigerian publication. Lagos: 2010. Vol. 8, Iss. 1-3; pg. 319, 15 pgs.
