Biology Students Honored at the Northeast Regional Conference of
Beta Beta Beta Biological Honors Society

Biology students, Ivelisse Izaguirre '12, Matthew Joslyn '12, and Julia Zorn '12 all received honors at the Northeast Regional Conference of Beta Beta Beta, the National Biological Honor Society, held on April 29 at Pace University in New York City. Izaguirre, under the mentorship of Teresa D'Aversa, PhD, Biology, received third place for her oral presentation, "Myelin Basic Protein Stimulates CCL2 Chemokine Secretion in Human Astrocytes: Importance in the Pathogenesis of Multiple Sclerosis." Joslyn, under the mentorship of Joseph Stabile, PhD, Biology, also received third place for his poster presentation, "Observance of the Bioaccumulation of Mercury in Phragmites australis and other Organisms in Marine Environments on Long Island Sound and the Hudson River." The sole honorable mention went to Zorn for her poster presentation, "Annexin II Participates in Cell Junction Assembly." In addition, Marcia Correa '13, under the mentorship of Eric Muller, PhD, Biology, presented a poster, and Daniel Lipus '12, under the mentorship of Dr. Stabile, gave an oral presentation at the conference. There were over 60 presentations from ten different colleges from the northeast region of the United States at the conference. Iona College Biology students have consistently placed well at this conference and at other research conferences over the past few years.

Iona Students for Peace Poll

During Heritage Week, Iona Students for Peace put up a peace pole in front of the Robert V. LaPenta Student Union. Iona Students for Peace and Josh Klein, PhD, Criminal Justice, are asking students, faculty and staff to fill out a five-minute survey about military and environmental security. The anonymous opinions will be part of the national election year conversation about how America can be safer. Please fill out the survey by Saturday, May 26.

Second-Annual Conference on Security Threat Assessment

Professional Activities

George Bournoutian, PhD, History, work entitled "An Armenian account of the Ottoman Siege of Erevan, 1724," was published in the Modern Middle East: A Sourcebook for History. Bournoutian's chapter is from his book Abraham of Erevan: History of the Wars, 1721-1738.

Dr. Bournoutian also gave three lectures in Southern California AGBU Centers (Pasadena, Canoga Park and Irvine) on his latest book, The 1823 Russian Survey of the Karabagh Province. While there he also gave a presentation to the graduating classes at the Marie Manoogian High School in Pasadena and Canoga Park. Bournoutian's review of Yaqub Mahmedoiv (ed.) Irevan Xanlighi (Baku, 2010) was published in Iran and the Caucasus, Vol. XVI (1.2012) in Leiden.

Adam M. Goldstein, PhD, Philosophy, presented his ideas about evolutionary biology, scientific explanation, and the importance of narrative in human life. The venue for the talk was the SUNY New Paltz Evolutionary Studies seminar. The talk may be viewed in a streaming video format here. Two weeks prior, Dr. Goldstein presented similar ideas at Stevens Institute of Technology, in Hoboken, NJ.

Andrew Griffith, Accounting, and Patricia Loubeau, Dr. Ph., Health Care Administration, published a paper entitled "Some Empirical Evidence of Sarbanes-Oxley Implementation in the Hospital Sector" in The Coastal Business Journal (2012), volume 11, issue 1, pages 39-47.








The work of Colleen Jacobson, PhD, Psychology, and graduate students in the Mental Health Counseling Program, Dima Grozeva and Alyson Murray, presented at the Annual Meeting of the American Association of Suicidology in Baltimore, MD on April 20. The title of the presentation was "Prevalence, Characteristics, and Correlates of Non-Suicidal Self-Injury Disorder among College Students." The presentation discussed the proposed criteria for NSSI Disorder, being considered for inclusion in the DSM V, and presented empirical evidence for the validity of the disorder. Dr. Jacobson is a co-author of the NSSI Disorder proposal and a consultant to the DSM V Task Force.

Meryl Nadel, DSW, Social Work, presented "Enhancing BSW Education Through Faculty Involvement in a Regional Environmental Consortium" at the annual Baccalaureate Social Work Program Directors Meeting. The presentation focused on the benefits of faculty development activities offered through the Environmental Consortium of Hudson Valley Colleges and Universities (ECHVCU). The conference took place in March in Portland, OR.

Carol Shansky, Fine and Performing Arts, presented a paper at the East Coast Band Conference at Rider University (NJ) on April 14, entitled "Histories of the Franklin and Waldwick Bands: Traditions and Discoveries."






Suzanne Thompson, Speech Communication Studies, presented a portion of her dissertation at the 52nd Annual New York State Speech-Language-Hearing Association's Convention in Saratoga, NY on April 27. A panel of judges including both downstate and upstate researchers, ranked her work highest, and she was awarded the organization's annual scholarship.
