New Grants for Iona College Programs
New Rochelle, New York, May 29, 2001 - Iona College has received several
private foundation grants in support of technology development and technology
literacy lectures, for endowed scholarships and to Iona's Peace Camp.
The Miles Hodsdon Vernon Foundation awarded $10,000 to increase the
amount of the endowed scholarship fund created through a matching grant
from the Louis Calder Foundation. Scholarships from this particular fund
are earmarked for students who reside in New York City.
Iona's Science and Technology Literacy Lectureship Series received a
one-year grant of $5,000 from The Josephine Lawrence Hopkins Foundation.
The series, directed by Dr. Victor Stanionis of Iona's Physics Department,
presents prestigious scientists during the year who address a variety
of science/technology issues. Alumnus William Hurley '57 was instrumental
in securing this prestigious grant.
A grant of $2,500 was given by the Independent College Fund of New York
for the College's Faculty Technology Resource Center, which provides
several faculty members the opportunity to participate in two technology
conferences.
As part of its Week of the Peacemaker commemoration, Iona invites local
school children from New Rochelle elementary schools to attend workshops
on respect and nonviolent conflict resolution. Known as Iona's Peace
Camp, the program will expand from a single afternoon to a series of
workshops, made possible with a $2,500 grant from The Louis R. Cappelli
Youth Services Fund of New Rochelle.
