Recent Grants to Iona College Approach $400,000
New Rochelle, NY, January 5, 2000 - Several private and public sector
grants have been awarded to Iona College in support of biological research,
science and technology mentoring and tutoring and to endow the College's
Honors Degree Program.
The National Science Foundation has awarded $153,280, over three years,
to support the research of Dr. Charles Sackerson of Iona's Biology Department.
Dr. Sackerson's research grant explores mechanisms of gene expression
and early development in the fruit fly, Drosophila melanogaster.
The New York State Education Department will support two Iona projects
that provide high-risk high school and middle school students with essential
computer skills, concentrating on science and technology preparedness.
A grant of $88,000 funds the Science and Technology Entry Program (STEP)
in which Iona College students work as tutors to local high school students
studying earth science, biology, chemistry and physics. The Liberty Partnership
Program Award of $124,530 serves students at Gorton High School in Yonkers,
NY with Iona College students as tutors in academic and related curricula
areas.
A Transamerica Foundation grant for $25,000 will establish an endowed
scholarship providing support for a student to attend the Hagan School
of Business. The first award from the endowment will be in Fall 2001.
This grant was obtained through the help of Iona alumnus, Edward Mann
'73, '74MBA, who serves as Executive Vice President and CFO of Transamerica
Leasing.
A grant of $200,000 has been awarded from the Trustees of the American
Express Foundation in support of the Iona College Honors Degree Program,
whose goal is to meet the educational needs of the ablest and most highly
motivated students at the College. Iona alumnus, Alfred F. Kelly, Jr.
'80, '81MBA, group president, U.S. Consumer and Small Business Services
at American Express commented on the grant. "As an undergraduate
and graduate school alumnus of Iona, it is gratifying to help link Iona
with American Express. We hope the American Express grant to the Honors
Program will enable the College and participating students to continue
their remarkable achievements."
