George Thottam to Lead Schools of Mass Communication

Named Dean at Rowan University

New Rochelle, NY, July 02, 2001 - Dr. George Thottam, chair of the Department of Mass Communication at Iona College, has been elected president of the Association of Schools of Journalism and Mass Communication (ASJMC).

The ASJMC provides leadership for mass communication education and acts as a liaison between educators and media organizations around the world. The association consists of departments, schools and colleges of journalism and mass communication for the U.S. and seven other countries.

Dr. Thottam has also been named dean of the College of Communication at Rowan University in Glassboro, New Jersey. Dr. Thottam will assume this position on July 16; however, he will continue to assist Iona's Department of Mass Communication in its efforts for national accreditation.

"I have been at Iona for 21 years and it is ironic that I have to leave during the last stage of the national accreditation of the College's program in Mass Communication. I will work all summer to complete the draft of the accreditation self-study report," states Dr. Thottam.

Next February the accrediting council will send a team of two deans, a senior executive of the Gannett newspapers, and a senior advertising professor from Michigan State University to Iona. Dr. Thottam notes, "this is a clear indication of the reputation of the Department of Mass Communication at Iona College."

"We are all very appreciative of the efforts and success that Dr. Thottam has achieved during his career at Iona College. Through his talents and his labors he has brought our program in Mass Communication to a level of national recognition and to the threshold of national accreditation," states President James A. Liguori, CFC.

Dr. Thottam, a graduate of the School of Journalism at Columbia University, won the "Journalism Teacher of the Year Award" from the Freedom Forum last summer. He is the president of the professional education section of the International Association for Media and Communications Research and a member of the Accrediting Council on Education in Journalism and Mass Communication. He heads two major committees of the Association on Education in Journalism and Mass Communication and serves on the editorial boards for three journals of communication.
