Peace and Justice Education Coordinator at Iona
College Appointed to Pax Christi at United Nations
New Rochelle, NY, January 22, 2001 - Michael W. Hovey, an Iona College
campus minister and coordinator of Peace and Justice Education, has been
appointed to represent Pax Christi International at the United Nations
Headquarters in New York City. Pax Christi, the international Catholic
peace movement, holds consultative status at the U. N. as a non-governmental
organization (NGO) and participates in conferences and committee work
in the areas of peace and security, human rights and humanitarian affairs.
As a Pax Christi NGO representative, he will be responsible for the area
of human rights and disarmament issues, coalition building and providing
testimony before U. N. committees.
Earlier in his career, Hovey served as an NGO representative for the
Maryknoll Fathers and Brothers during the First U. N. Special Session
on Disarmament, and also for Pax Christi International in 1993, when
he participated in the 49th session of the U. N. Human Rights Commission
in Geneva, Switzerland. A member of Pax Christi since the mid-'70s, he
was elected to the organization's National Council from 1987-1993. His
doctoral thesis deals with the role played by NGOs at the United Nations
in the recognition and promotion of human rights.
