Women's History Week Celebrates 20th Anniversary
of Women's Studies at Iona College
New Rochelle, NY, February 28, 2001 - The Women's History Week Committee
in coordination with the Women's Studies Department will host events
associated with Women's History Week celebrating the 20th anniversary
of Women's Studies at Iona College. All events are free and open to the
public, with the exception of the Woman of Achievement Dinner which costs
$22 per person.
Beginning on Sunday, March 4, at an Opening Liturgy, Dr. Kathleen Deignan,
CND, will offer her reflections with Sandra Rivera, director of the Omega
Liturgical Dancers in New York City, who will present original choreography.
This celebration will take place at 7 pm in Arrigoni Center. All events
take place on the New Rochelle campus, 715 North Avenue.
On Monday, March 5 at 6:30 pm in Spellman Lounge on the New Rochelle
campus, "You've Come a Long Way Baby: Women in Management, Religion,
Social Work and Peacemaking" will be addressed by a panel of Iona
scholars including Sister Deignan, a professor in the College's Religious
Studies Department; Michael Hovey, coordinator of Peace and Justice Education
at Iona; Dr. Donald Grunewald in the College's Management and Business
Administration Department; and Dr. Jeanne Matich-Maroney of Iona's Social
Work Department.
Dr. Susan Feiner, an associate professor of economics and women's studies
at the University of Southern Maine in Portland, ME will address "Toward
a More Perfect Union: Reflections on Gender and Social Justice at the
Dawn of the New Millennium," on Tuesday, March 6 at 11 am in the
Ryan Library Auditorium. Dr. Feiner has worked as a PI (principal investigator)
or coPI for the National Science Foundation funded faculty development
projects aimed at improving economic education. These grants have helped
faculty integrate material concerning the status of women and people
of color into their introductory economics classes. Her research has
appeared in The American Economic Review, The Cambridge Journal of Economics
and Gender and Society. She is currently working on projects addressing
questions of access to and equity in economics education.
On Tuesday evening, at 7 pm in Ryan Library Auditorium, "Eleanor
Roosevelt: A One Woman Play will be presented by author and actress Page

On Wednesday, March 7, at 5 p.m, in Spellman Lounge, the College's annual
Woman of Achievement Dinner will honor Stephanie Schwartz, a founding
member of Women's Studies at Iona. Please call (914) 637-2773 to reserve.
On Thursday, March 8 at 12:30 pm in the Faculty Reception Room in
Spellman Hall, the Women's Scholarship Luncheon recognizes students as
they celebrate their scholarship and present their work on issues related
to Women's Studies.
The Iona Spirituality Institute will present nationally acclaimed artist
Sheila Kriemelman who will explore the potential of artistic expression
to empower healing and emotional renewal. Please call Katie Byrnes at

In addition to these events, Women's History Week will offer special
classes associated with women's issues: "The Price of Glory: Female
Gymnasts and Ice Skaters," with Dr. Gai Berlage of Iona's Sociology
Department, on Tuesday, March 6 at 10 am in Hagan, Room 108; "Women
and Art: The Academicians," with artist Sheila Kriemelman on Tuesday,
March 6 at 6:30 pm in the Media Room of the College's Arts Center;
and Dr. Greg Tully of the Social Work Department, offering "Abused
Women: Why Don't they Just Leave?" on Wednesday, March 7 at 3:45
p. m. in Doorley 220. All three lectures are free and open to the public.
