Iona College to Honor George R. Lewis '68MBA at
40th Annual Trustee Award Dinner Dance
Major Event Scheduled for March 30 at The Waldorf-Astoria
New Rochelle, NY, March 2, 2001 - Iona College will honor George R.
Lewis '68MBA, president and chief executive officer of Philip Morris
Capital Corporation, at its 40th Annual Trustee Award Dinner Dance on
Friday, March 30, beginning at 6 pm in the Grand Ballroom of The Waldorf-Astoria
in New York City. Mr. Lewis will be recognized by his alma mater for
his long-term commitment to the College.
Mr. Lewis earned his MBA from Iona's Hagan School of Business in 1968
and was awarded The Brother Arthur A. Loftus Achievement Award in Finance
from the College in 1981.
Philip Morris Capital Corporation, a company that invests in leveraged
leases and structured financing transactions on a worldwide basis, has
a portfolio with a broad mix of investments ranging from aircraft, real
estate, vessels and rail assets. It is one of Philip Morris Companies
Inc. principal operating companies which include Kraft Foods, Inc., Miller
Brewing Company, Philip Morris International, and Philip Morris USA.
Mr. Lewis serves on the Corporate Management Committee of Philip Morris
Companies Inc., the parent company.
Mr. Lewis previously served as vice president and treasurer of Philip
Morris Companies Inc. from 1984-1997, where he was responsible for worldwide
treasury activities. Mr. Lewis joined Philip Morris Companies Inc. in
September 1967 as a corporate analyst. He was named senior planning analyst
in 1969; manager, Financial Relations in 1970; manager, Financial Services
in 1972 and assistant treasurer in 1973.
In 1975, Mr. Lewis was appointed vice president, Financial and Planning
of Philip Morris Industrial, and in October 1982 was named vice president,
Finance for the Seven-Up Company, both former Philip Morris Companies
Inc. subsidiaries. In 1984, Mr. Lewis was elected vice president and
treasurer of Philip Morris Companies Inc.
Prior to his tenure at Philip Morris, Mr. Lewis was a product analyst
with General Foods Corporation from 1963-1966, and a financial analyst
with W. R. Grace from 1966 to 1967.
In addition to the Loftus Achievement award from Iona, Mr. Lewis has
been the recipient of numerous awards, among them the Outstanding Twenty
Year Alumnus Award from Hampton University; The Morehouse College Candle
award in Business; Blackbook's Business and Professional Award; the National
Bankers Association Pioneer Award; and the CNN Trumpet Tower of Power
Award, an award which "trumpets the presence of a new generation
of African American business leaders." Lewis was listed in Black
Enterprise's "Top 25 Black Corporate Executives" and Ebony's "Top
12 African American Corporate Executives." He is also listed in
Who's Who in America and Who's Who in Black America.
Mr. Lewis is a member of the Board of Directors of Wachovia Corporation,
Ceridian Corporation and Kemper National Insurance Company. He also serves
on the Board of Trustees of Hampton University, where he earned his Bachelor
of Science Degree in Accounting, the Board of the Stamford (CT) Cultural
Development Corporation, and is a member of the Investment Committee
of the Professional Golfers Association of America. He has also served
as a Trustee of Meharry Medical College and was a member of the Board
of Directors for the National Urban League, the Professional Golfers
Association of America and the Business Consortium Fund. He also served
on the Advisory Board of the National Bankers Association, where he served
as Chairman, on the New York City Debt Advisory Council.
