Iona College Celebrates 20th Annual Goal Club Hall of Fame Golf Outing

New Rochelle, NY, May 15, 2001 - Iona College will celebrate its 20th Annual Goal Club Hall of Fame Golf Outing on Monday, June 4 at the beautiful Wykagyl Country Club in New Rochelle, NY. To reserve a foursome or for more information, please contact Denis Fahey at (914) 633-2004.

The 2001 Iona College Goal Club Hall of Fame Inductees are:
Joe Rees '54, founder of the Iona 5'ers, now known as the Goal Club. Rees served as Chairman of the "Long Step Forward," the major fund raising drive for the John A. Mulcahy Campus Center which began in 1971 and concluded with the construction of the building in 1974. The original Iona 5'ers served as the primary fund raisers for the Mulcahy Campus Center.

Rees served as president during the initial stages of the transition, as the 5'ers became the Goal Club in 1976. Today, the Goal Club raises hundreds of thousands of dollars annually, in support of Iona athletics. Rees remains a loyal supporter and contributor to the Iona College Athletics Department.

Kieran Stack '86, ' 91MBA enters the Goal Club Hall of Fame as one of the top distance runners in the history of the cross country and track programs at Iona. Stack, the assistant principal at Brewster High School in Brewster, NY helped lead the 1982 Gael Harriers to the school's first-ever NCAA Championship appearance, at which they finished 18th. Stack captured the 1983 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) cross-country title in a championship record time of 24:26:50 at Van Cortlandt Park. It was the second fastest time run by an Iona athlete on the storied cross-country course.

On the track, Stack was dominant in the 3,000m steeplechase. He qualified for the NCAA Championship three times, earning All-American status twice in that event, placing fifth in 1985 and seventh in 1986. He also captured an Iona-best three IC4A title in the steeplechase, setting a new school and Eastern Collegiate record of 8:29:60 in 1985. Both records still stand today.

Maggie Timoney '89, '92MBA will be inducted into the Goal Club Hall of Fame as one of the greatest women's basketball players in the history of the program.

A four-year standout for the Lady Gaels, Timoney currently ranks as the Gaels' all-time leading scorer, tallying 1,894 career points. As a freshman, Timoney was named the 1986 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Rookie of the Year and her 12.7 points per game average still ranks as the top freshman scoring average in Iona history. She led the team in scoring in each of her next three years, averaging a program best of 16.6 points per game throughout her career. As a sophomore, Timoney was named to the All-MAAC First Team after averaging 19.9 points a game.

Timoney, currently senior manager of Strategic Planning and Distribution for Heineken USA, ranks among the top five all-time in the Iona record book in seven other offensive categories, including ranking first on field goal attempts, three-point field goal percentage and free throws made and attempted lists. After graduation, Timoney served for two years as a graduate assistant coach for the Lady Gaels from 1989-91.
