Iona College Offers Fall Schedule of Events in Jewish-Catholic Studies

New Rochelle, NY, September 21, 2000 - Dr. Elena Procario-Foley, assistant professor of religious studies at Iona College and the first Brother John G. Driscoll Professor in Jewish-Catholic Studies at the College is pleased to announce the Fall 2000 schedule of events for the Driscoll Professorship. All events are free and open to the public.

The first event will take place on Wednesday, October 4, 2000 at 8 pm in Spellman Lounge on the Iona campus, 715 North Avenue, New Rochelle. This program, Shared Roots: The Days of Our Repentance, Jewish and Catholic Perspectives, marks the second semester of collaboration between the Driscoll Professorship and the American Jewish Committee (AJC) of Westchester. This joint effort is dedicated to educating members of both faiths about their similarities and differences with the objective of developing respect and appreciation for both religious traditions.

Dr. Mary C. Boys, SNJM, the Skinner and McAlpin Professor of Practical Theology at Union Theological Seminary, and a member of the Sisters of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary, will speak from the Catholic perspective. Dr. Neil Gilman of the Jewish Theological Seminary of America will offer the Jewish perspective. Both speakers are involved in the Abrahamic Accord.

On Thursday, October 19 at 4 pm in Joyce Auditorium, Dr. Eugene Fisher, will present the Second Annual Driscoll Lecture in Jewish-Catholic Studies titled Catholic-Jewish Relations: Controversies and Challenges for the Future. Dr. Fisher is the director of Catholic-Jewish Relations for the Secretariat for Ecumenical and Inter-religious Affairs of the National Conference of Catholic Bishops (NCCB) and the first layperson to hold the NCCB post.

During Iona's Week of the Peacemaker (November 12-17), Building a Culture of Peace: Perspectives on Anti-Semitism and Extremism will be presented by Kenneth S. Stern, program specialist on anti-Semitism and extremism for the American Jewish Committee. A National Expert on bigotry on campus, hate crimes, the militia movement and anti-Semitism, Stern promises to be challenging and enlightening.

The Brother John G. Driscoll Professorship in Jewish-Catholic Studies, Iona's first endowed professorship, was established with a $1,000,000 gift from Jack '86H and Susan Rudin to study and celebrate the relationship between the Jewish and Catholic cultures and beliefs.

The Spring series of events begins in March 2001.
