Make a Difference Day Celebrated on Iona Campus
Hundreds "Do Good" at Sites Throughout the County
New Rochelle, NY, October 19, 2000 - Joining the national 'Make
a Difference Day," sponsored by USA Weekend Magazine and the Points of
Light Foundation, Iona will join more than 200 colleges and universities
with over 2 million volunteers, nationwide, to help local community organizations
on Saturday, October 28, 2000.
Iona's day of "neighbors helping neighbors" will begin at 9 am in
front of Spellman Hall on the campus at 715 North Avenue, New Rochelle.
Faculty, staff, students and alumni will choose from among the following
sights:
- Habitat for Humanity - involves basic home construction for families
in need of decent housing. Projects include painting, landscaping,
drywall and other construction activities;
- New Rochelle Parks and Recreation Department - volunteers will clean
up trash and graffiti in the Huguenot Park area in front of New Rochelle
High School on North Avenue;
- Green Chimneys - a residential childcare program that brings kids
from inner city communities to spend time on a working farm will have
Iona volunteers install a fence;
- Abraham House, a home for formerly incarcerated men, will have volunteers
visiting with families and preparing a meal. Items from a baby shower/housewarming
party will be delivered as well;
- Desda's Grate, a home for formerly homeless mothers and children
will be made ready for their move and settling in. They will also share
in the baby shower/housewarming party items;
- Hope Soup Kitchen will provide opportunities for painting and rehabilitating
the space where the daily soup kitchen is held;
- Children's Village where volunteers will help prepare grounds for
the 150 anniversary celebration by planting flower beds with bulbs;
and on Friday, October 27, from 11 am to 1 pm in Spellman Lounge,
Iona will throw a baby shower/housewarming party. Donations of toys
and household items will be donated to Desda's Grate and Abraham House.
Sponsored by Iona's Center for Campus Ministries, "Make
a Difference Day" encompasses the College's mission of prizing the
value of service. Participation encourages the College community to
do as Ralph Waldo Emerson said, "Do not go where the path may lead,
go instead where there is no path and leave a trail."
