With Significant Percentage of Westchester Voters Still Undecided, Clinton Holds Slight Edge in Senate Race

New Rochelle, NY, October 26, 2000 - Iona College's most recent Survey of Westchester County residents, through its Center for Social Research, reveals that 39 percent of County residents would vote for Hillary Clinton as their U.S. Senator, while 35 percent would select Rick Lazio. Of those surveyed, 16 percent remain undecided.

Within the sample of Westchester residents surveyed, several notable patterns emerge:

  • Concerning party affiliation, Lazio carries 72 percent of respondents who identified themselves as Republican, with 48 percent of his support coming from Independent respondents. Clinton carries 68 percent of Democrats, but only 25 percent of Independents.
  • When considering gender, Clinton carries 39 percent of women surveyed; Lazio 33 percent. However, 19 percent of women remain undecided. The male vote split almost evenly with Clinton earning 39 percent to Lazio's 40 percent, with 11 percent of men still undecided.
  • Regarding race, Clinton does well with all minority group voters: 67 percent of African Americans, 41 percent of Hispanics and 61 percent of Asian respondents prefer the Democratic candidate, while Lazio only received 5 percent, 11 percent and 28 percent of these categories, respectively. White, non-Hispanic voters favored Lazio 46 percent to Clinton at 31 percent.
  • Education attainment finds Clinton doing better with respondents with no high school diploma, 41 percent to Lazio's 25 percent while those respondents with postgraduate educations chose Clinton 44 percent to 37 percent for Lazio.
  • Those 65 years or older are split between Clinton at 39 percent and Lazio at 40 percent. Younger respondents (18-29) favor Clinton at 41 percent with Lazio at 22 percent, but 25 percent of these respondents are undecided. Clinton has a slight edge with the 50-64 year-old respondents, with 43 percent for Clinton and 35 percent to Lazio.

Survey results were completed in late October 2000 and have a margin of error of +/- 4 percent. For additional information, please contact Professor Brian Nickerson at (914) 633-2697.

Providing interdisciplinary research opportunities for faculty and students, the Iona College Center for Social Research was established with campus-wide support to help create dialogue about timely issues facing Westchester County, New York State and the nation. This survey involves four disciplines - Mathematics, Political Science, Sociology and Social Work - and is staffed by five faculty members and more than 30 students who gain practical experience in an active learning environment.
