Week of the Peacemaker Emphasizes Building A Culture
of Peace at Iona College
New Rochelle, NY, October 31, 2000 - In keeping with the United Nations "International
Year for a Culture of Peace 2000," the theme at Iona College for
its Week of the Peacemaker, November 12-17, 2000, will be "Building
a Culture of Peace at Iona College." All events and activities during
the week will address the question, what would a culture of peace look
like at Iona and around the world?
The week's events begin on Sunday, November 12 at 7 pm with an Opening
Mass at Arrigoni Chapel. On Monday, November 13, from 12 noon to 1 pm,
a Brown Bag Luncheon in the Faculty Reception Room will have Dr. David
B. Coplan, professor of Social Anthropology at the University of the
Witwatersrand, South Africa, who will present "Report on Post-Apartheid
South Africa: Building Peace through Reconciliation."
On Tuesday, November 14, from 11 am to 12 noon in Joyce Auditorium,
the first keynote address "Hate that Leads to Violence: Extremism
and Anti-Semitism in America," will be delivered by Kenneth Stern,
program specialist on anti-Semitism and Extremism at the American Jewish
Committee. Mr. Stern is a national expert on bigotry on campus, hate
crimes, the militia movement and anti-Semitism.
A workshop in Spellman Lounge "When Love Hurts: Dealing with Unhealthy
Relationships," co-sponsored by the Counseling Center and CHOICES
Peer Educators will take place from 11 am to 12 noon.
On Wednesday, November 15, a Town Hall Meeting in Spellman Lounge, from
4:30 to 6 pm, will address "Being 'Other' at Iona College: Diversity
and Respect for those in Minorities," will be sponsored by the Anti-hate
Task Force. From 6:30 to 8 pm, in Spellman Lounge, a panel discussion "A
Culture of Peace in New Rochelle," will feature participants from
local agencies in the City. The panel discussion is sponsored by the
College's Social Work Department.
On Thursday, November 16, from 11 am to 12 noon in Joyce Auditorium,
the second keynote will feature John Zuroski, executive director of the
Westchester County Human Rights Commission, who will discuss "Respecting
Human Rights Creates a Culture of Peace in Westchester County." From
7 to 9 pm, a Peacemaker Potluck and Cabaret will take place in Spellman
Lounge, followed by a Candlelight Vigil for a Culture of Peace from 9
to 11 pm.
