Iona College Celebrates Black History Month Activities
Begin on Campus on January 31
New Rochelle, NY, January 24, 2002 - In celebration of Black
History Month, the Council of Multicultural Leaders (CML) has planned
a series of events celebrating the history and achievements of African
Americans. All activities are open to the public and take place on campus
at 715 North Avenue in New Rochelle.
Opening ceremonies will take place on Thursday, January 31 at 12 noon
in Spellman Hall. Sophomores Kimalee Thomas and Binta Watkins, members
of CML, will share poetry and personal writings that reflect on "What
is Black History." Also participating are CML members Joel Collymore,
Mellisa Smith and Christina West, who will sing.
Businessman Keith Bryant will talk about his dedication to running his
own local business that caters to the residents of New Rochelle, which
he started after leaving a high-paying job. Please call for specific
time and place.
Other events include:
- An art exhibit in the Brother Kenneth Chapman Gallery of the Iona
College Arts Center from Sunday, January 27-Sunday, February 17. On
Thursday, February 7 at 12 noon, all are welcome to learn about African
American History and Art. Refreshments will be served.
- "Gospel Explosion" on Friday, February 8 at 8 pm featuring local
choirs in the Gael Club.
- Annual Jazz and Poetry Night on Friday, February 15 at 8 pm in
Spellman Lounge.
- Annual event "The Comedy Explosion" featuring Rob Stapleton, Drew
Frasier and Suga Bear on Thursday, February 21 at 8 pm in Joyce Auditorium.
- Closing ceremonies on Thursday, February 28 at 12 noon in Spellman
Lounge will feature Kelly Johnson, director, New Rochelle Youth Bureau.
- Caribbean Night on Friday, March 1 at 9 pm in Spellman Lounge offers
food and a DJ.
