Iona College Offers Groundbreaking Workshop in School
Psychology
New Rochelle, NY, March 7, 2002 - On Thursday, April 4, 2002, from 5:30
pm to 8:00 pm in Arrigoni Center at Iona College's New Rochelle campus,
Joseph G. Ponterotto, PhD, an Iona College alumnus, will present a
state-of-the-art workshop "School Psychology in the 21st Century:
Multicultural Visions." Dr. Ponterotto is a national authority and
author in the area of multicultural counseling. He is the senior author
of the award winning Preventing Prejudice: A Guide for Counselors and
Educators. and the senior editor of the groundbreaking first and second
editions of Handbook of Multicultural Counseling.
After graduating from Iona College in 1980, Dr. Ponterotto earned his
PhD at the University of California at Santa Barbara. He is currently
a professor in the Fordham University Graduate School of Education. This
program is recognized by the American Psychological Association as a
model for the integration of multiculturalism into its curriculum.
Dr. Ponterotto will be speaking about the importance of integrating
multiculturalism into the academic training of psychologists and into
the clinical practice of psychology. He will also offer specific recommendations
and strategies on how to accomplish these goals.
This program will be chaired by Tresmaine Grimes, PhD, faculty member
of the Psychology Department with Paul Greene, PhD, chair of the Psychology
Department as discussant. This gathering has been organized by the New
York Group of the Society for Psychological Study of Social Issues and
the New York State Psychological Association. The program is hosted by
Iona College, its new Master of Arts Program in School Psychology and
its Psi Chi Chapter. Admission is free and open to the public. A two-hour
continuing education credit is available to participants for a modest
fee.
