Iona College Celebrates 58th Commencement May 18
Rev. Mychal Judge of the FDNY to Receive Posthumous Honorary Doctor
of Humane Letters
New Rochelle, NY, May 6, 2002 - The 58th Annual Iona College Commencement
Exercises for undergraduate and graduate students will occur on Saturday,
May 18 at 10 am on the New Rochelle campus, 715 North Avenue. James
A. Liguori, CFC, president of Iona College, will address the 700 students
receiving bachelor's degrees and the 300 students receiving master's
degrees.
Kelly E. Cummins, president of the Student Government Association, will
present the student welcome. Dennis Michael Wallace, Jr. and Denise M.
Stefano will offer the response on behalf of the graduates.
Iona will honor Mychal Judge, OFM, posthumously with a Doctor of Humane
Letters degree for his ability to show love and forgiveness in the face
of hate and injury. Father Judge, chaplain of the NYC Fire Department,
became the first official fatality of the World Trade Center tragedy
on September 11, 2001, and a national symbol of courage and sacrifice
when he raced to the North Tower, ministering to the injured and dying.
Dr. John W. Mulcahy, who earned two master's degrees from Iona -- an
MSEd in education and English in 1971, and an MBA in organizational behavior
and finance in 1972 -- will receive an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters
degree for his commitment to education for more than 30 years. During
his 17 years as Dean of the Graduate School of Business and Public Management
at the University of Bridgeport, he was instrumental in winning accreditation
for Bridgeport's Graduate School from the highly selective Association
to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB International). Dr.
Mulcahy wrote six books addressing ethical practices, leadership and
administrative analytics; he is a founding trustee of the US Naval War
College Foundation and a member of the Board of Selectors of the National
Institute of Higher Education in Ireland. In 1972, President Richard
Nixon appointed him to the initial Board of Directors of the Student
Loan Marketing Association.
New Rochelle resident Ossie Davis will be honored with a Doctor of Fine
Arts degree for his numerous achievements in the theatre, on the screen
and for human rights. Together, Davis and his wife, actress Ruby Dee,
make up one of America's most respected performing arts collaborations.
Their work, including starring roles in A Raisin in the Sun on Broadway,
has been honored with a Presidential Medal for Lifetime Achievement in
the Arts and a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Screen Actors Guild.
When not performing, they have fought for human dignity and social justice,
becoming close friends with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and serving
as masters of ceremonies for the historic 1963 civil rights march on
Washington.
Iona will honor Florence D'Urso with a Doctor of Fine Arts degree for
her leading contributions to the arts, healthcare, education, and to
her faith. Mrs. D'Urso is the first woman to serve as a Trustee of St.
Patrick's Cathedral in New York City. Combining her devotion to the church
with her patronage of the arts, she serves as a patron of the Vatican
Museums and has undertaken a major commitment to help preserve the treasures
contained there. Her projects include a vaulted ceiling, restored in
honor of Pope John Paul II; and a Perugino fresco in the Sistine Chapel,
a work by Raphael in the Stanza della Segnatura. Mrs. D'Urso also built
Iona's Our Lady Queen of Peace Chapel on the College campus in appreciation
for the education of her two sons- Mark, a 1984 Iona graduate, and the
late David, a 1983 Iona graduate.
Founded in 1940 by the Congregation of Christian Brothers, Iona College
is a private, coeducational institution of learning in the tradition
of American Catholic higher education. Iona offers undergraduate degrees
in liberal arts, science, and business administration, as well as Master
of Arts, Master of Science and Master of Business Administration degrees
and numerous post-graduate certificate programs.
