Four Alumni to be Honored June 3 by Iona College at 21st Annual Goal Club Golf Outing at Wykagyl Country Club

New Rochelle, NY, May 9, 2002 - Iona College will celebrate four former athletes at its 21st Annual Goal Club Hall of Fame Golf Outing on Monday, June 3 at the Wykagyl Country Club, 1195 North Avenue, New Rochelle, NY. This event includes 18 holes on Wykagyl's challenging course, site of the LPGA Sybase Big Apple Classic, and cocktails and dinner with alumni, friends and fans of intercollegiate athletics as Iona inducts four Gael greats into the Goal Club Hall of Fame. The 2002 Iona College Goal Club Hall of Fame inductees are as follows:

Ray Hyland '74 led the Gaels in scoring -- averaging 18.9 points per game -- during his senior year on the Iona men's basketball team. He was Iona's top rebounder for two consecutive seasons and his average 15.2 rebounds per game during the 1971-72 season is the third best in Iona history. Hyland's career at Iona totals 69 games played, 1,105 points and 910 rebounds.

Larry McGee '85 enters the Goal Club Hall of Fame as one of the top athletes in the history of Iona's hockey program. The all-time leader in assists with 131, McGee was a three-time team Most Valuable Player during his years at Iona. He also holds the Iona record for most points in a season -- 67 in 1985.

Iona football great Tom Proudian '96 quarterbacked the College through its first season in Division I-AA in 1993, leading the Gaels to the inaugural Metropolitan Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Championship. Proudian holds evey Iona passing record and in 1994 he was voted MAAC Player of the Year. He played in 35 games, passing for 8,975 yards and 67 touchdowns during his career as a Gael.

Joe Tighe '60, a driving force behind the organization of Iona's Goal Club, led the men's basketball team in rebounding-- averaging 13.4 per game-- during the 1959-60 season, making him number six in Iona's record books for a single season total.

Founded in 1940 by the Congregation of Christian Brothers, Iona College is a private, coeducational institution of learning in the tradition of American Catholic higher education.
