New Grants to Iona College Exceed $100,000

New Rochelle, NY, February 11, 2002 - Iona has received several private foundation and government grants in support of the College's science, criminal justice and Spirituality Institute programs.

The Criminal Justice Department received $37,000 from Westchester County to continue its evaluation of batterers and victims through the Westchester County Probation Department's Probation Against Violence (PAV) Program. The PAV Program provides for victim focused, intensive supervision of domestic violence offenders. The model is designed for the post sentence/disposition containment of batterers serving sentences from criminal court or dispositions from family court. The Criminal Justice Department completed their initial evaluation of the PAV Program that was funded with a $30,000 grant to Iona from the U.S. Department of Justice in spring 2000.

The Balm Foundation awarded $9,000 to Kathleen Deignan, CND, Ph.D, founder and director of Iona's Spirituality Institute, to fund the Institute's ongoing commitment to inter-contemplative dialogue and practice, especially important as the unprecedented interchange among and between the world's religions grows toward a new global interfaith dialogue.

The National Science Foundation (NSF) has awarded two grants. The first, in the amount of $64,969, entitled "Incorporation of FT-NMR into the Curriculum" is under the direction of Terrence E. Gavin, PhD and Jerome S. Levkov, PhD of the Chemistry Department and Stephen D'Alessio, PhD of the Computer Science Department. The nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy is a powerful method for structure determination in organic chemistry. It is also critically important in chemical education, since interpretation of the experiments compels students to confront the details of the structural theory.

The second NSF grant, in the amount of $10,000, is for deuterated isotope (HDO) on Mars. Robert Novak, CFC, PhD '72 of the Physics Department, provides data products for the column density and spatial distribution of ozone, participates in field observation and in the preparation of scientific publications.
