Iona College to Host Multi-Department Discussion
on Oct. 16 About Recent Terrorist Attacks and Possible Future Developments
Six Speakers to Help Community Understand Past Events, Consider What
Might Occur
New Rochelle, NY, October 5, 2001 - In the wake of the recent
terrorist attacks, Iona College will host "September 11 and After: An
Interdisciplinary Discussion" to provide a better understanding of the
events that occurred and what actions may happen in the future as the
United States' War on Terrorism begins. The discussion will be held at
7 pm on Tuesday, Oct. 16, at Spellman Hall on the main campus of the
college, located at 715 North Ave. in New Rochelle. Featuring presentations
from six college professors from different disciplines, the event is
free and open to the public.
"Iona College has contributed to our local community since its formation
more than six decades ago," said James A. Liguori, CFC, President of
Iona College. "Through World War II, the Korean conflict and the hostilities
in Vietnam, Iona has tried to provide comfort and understanding to not
only our students, faculty and alumni, but also to our neighbors, friends
and the community at large. As a school in the tradition of American
Catholic higher education, Iona tries to provide more than just knowledge
of information and skills to our students. We believe it is important
to help in the character development of each individual, and in this
time of crisis we want to help in any way we can. By freely exchanging
ideas, helping to answer people's questions, and trying to ease their
fears we can help right now."
This group discussion is the most recent of a significant group of activities
that were created to help deal with the grief, anger and fear that many
members of the Iona community felt after the terrorist attacks. At least
104 Iona alumni had their offices at the World Trade Center on September
11. To date, at least 15 alumni and four parents of students or alumni
are among the missing or dead.
Co-hosting the event will be Dr. Alex Eodice, Dean of the Iona College
School of Arts & Science, and Dr. Nick Beutell, Dean of the Hagan
School of Business. The six presentations will feature expert insight
and analysis on a diverse group of topics:
- "The Geography of Afghanistan: Lesson from the Past" by Prof. Daniel
Smith (History and Political Science)
- "The United States as Viewed by the Muslim World" by Prof. George
Bournoutian (History and International Studies)
- "The Changing Face of U.S. Immigration Policy" by Prof. J.L. Nasuti
(Finance, Business Economics and Legal Studies)
- "The Economy and the Financial Markets After September 11" by Prof.
Anand Shetty (Finance, Business Economics and Legal Studies)
- "Legal Responses to the Terrorist Attacks" by Prof. Paul O'Connell
(Criminal Justice)
- "Justice or Revenge: Which Response to Unspeakable Evil?" by Prof.
Michael Jordan (Philosophy)
Following the presentations, questions from the audience and open dialogue
will occur with these professors and others with additional expertise.
