Iona College to Observe Week of the Peacemaker Nov.

More than 20 Events Consider “Is Peace Possible? Seeking Peace
in Uncertain Times”
New Rochelle, NY, November 7, 2001 - In celebration of The Week
of the Peacemaker November 11-16, Iona College has scheduled a week of
activities around the topic “Is Peace Possible? Seeking Peace in
Uncertain Times.” More than 20 events - including lectures, prayer
services, an all day teach-in, a town hall meeting, an intercultural
dinner, and artistic dance performances - will focus on questions that
have arisen since the terrorist attacks of September 11. All events are
free and open to the public, and they will take place on the main campus
of the College at 715 North Ave. in New Rochelle.
Activities begin with an opening Community Liturgy at the Arrigoni Center
at 7 pm on Sunday, November 11. On Monday, November 12, a roundtable
luncheon will be held at 12 noon in the Faculty Reception Room of Spellman
Hall to discuss “Is Peace Possible”; those wishing to attend
this event are requested to make advance reservations with Katie Byrnes
at 633-2340. Later, Sr. Stacy Hanrahan, a Non-Government Organization
representative to the United Nations, will present a lecture entitled “Dialogue
Among Civilizations” at 2:30 pm in the Faculty Reception Room.
An evening lecture, entitled “Preventing Prejudice in Times of
Crisis,” will be presented at 7 pm in Spellman Lounge by Dr.
Joseph Ponterotto, Professor of Counseling Psychology at Fordham University.
On Tuesday, November 13, at 11 am in Joyce Auditorium, Dr. Joseph
Salvo, Chief Demographer for the City of New York, will deliver the Keynote
Address of the week entitled “Immigration and Population Change
in New York City.” Dr. Leonard Feinberg, Professor of Pastoral
Counseling at Iona College, will present “The Normalcy of Post-Traumatic
Stress Disorder” at 2 pm in Spellman Lounge.
The ninth annual Iona College Peace Camp, hosting 50 fifth graders from
New Rochelle elementary schools, will feature Newbery and Christopher
award-winning children's novelist, Joan Bauer. Iona students will work
with the children to develop skits and small group projects during the
camp, which runs from 4-7 pm in Spellman Lounge.
At 6:30 pm in Ryan Library Auditorium, Dr, Brian Davies, Professor of Philosophy
at Fordham University will offer the lecture “Aquinas on Evil.” The
lecture is co-sponsored by the Iona College Department of Philosophy.
A full day of lectures is scheduled for Wednesday, November 14, in Spellman
Lounge.

by Dr. Elena Procario-Foley, Dept. of Religious Studies
- 10 am - “Terrorism vs. Revolutionary Movements: What’s
the Difference?” by Dr. Mary Hagerty, Dept. of History and Political
Science; and “Afghanistan: The Land and the People” by
Dr. Dan Smith, Dept. of History and Political Science
- 11 am - “Anthrax: It’s Mechanism of Action and Spread” by
Dr. Frank Fazio, Dept. of Biology
- 12 pm - “The Anti-Terrorism Act and Its Impact on Immigrant
Communities” by Dr. J..L. Nasuti, Dept. of Finance, Business
Economics, and Legal Studies; and “America’s Response:
An Array of Legal Options” by Dr. Paul O’Connell, Dept.
of Criminal Justice
- 1 pm - “Justice and Just War: A Philosophical Inquiry” by
Dr. Michael Jordan, Dept. of Philosophy; and “Christian Traditions
on Violence and War” by Michael Hovey, Coordinator, Peace and
Justice Education
- 2 pm - “Scientific Contributions of Islam” by Dr. Samah
Senbel, Dept. of Computer Science; “How Does the Muslim World
View the US and Why Are Their Perceptions So Different From Ours?” by
Dr. George Bournoutian, Dept. of History and Political Science; and “Under
the Shadow of War, How People React” by Dr. Paul Greene, Dept.
of Psychology
At 4 pm in Spellman Lounge, Iona will host a Town Hall Meeting to
discuss the topic “Coping With Uncertain Times” featuring
personal responses to current events and suggestions for coping with
fears or problems. Dr. Ingrid Grieger, Director of the Counseling Centers
at Iona, and Terry Keyes, from Iona’s Office for Student Retention
will coordinate the meeting. Michael Hovey will present “Peacemakers
Respond to Terrorism” at 6:30 pm. A candlelight vigil for peace
at 9:30 pm on the Spellman Hall portico will conclude Wednesday activities.
On Thursday, November 15, at 9 am in Joyce Auditorium, Mr. Ghazi Khankan,
an expert in the Islamic faith, will present “An Imam Lectures
on Islam.” There will be an Interfaith Religious Service at 12
pm in Spellman Lounge. The Iona Student Government Association and
various student organizations on campus will sponsor “Diverse Cultures/Diverse
Foods,” a pot-luck hospitality supper at Montgomery House.
A multi-discipline, intergenerational dance performance celebrating
America’s diversity entitled “Unique Voices, Common Language” will
be held at 8 pm in Joyce Auditorium. The event will be directed by
Catherine Mapp, Dept. of Fine Arts.
The activities for the week conclude on Friday, November 16, at 12 pm
when Fr. Joseph McCarthy will celebrate a Memorial Mass for Peace in
St. Mary’s Chapel.
