Iona College Graduate Named Delaware’s Teacher of the Year

New Rochelle, NY, November 15, 2001 -- Tanya N. Marcinkewicz, a sixth-grader teacher at Harlan Elementary School in Wilmington, Delaware, is the 2001 Delaware Teacher of the Year. Marcinkewicz, 36, graduated from Iona College with a Master of Science degree in multi-cultural education in 1992.

“Sometimes there are teachers who are born teachers. That is Tanya. She is a master at what she does,” said Harlan Principal Anita E. Thorpe.

Marcinkewicz has been at Harlan since 1989 and currently teaches language arts and science. In addition to her work in the classroom, she participates in numerous educational activities and committees, which include serving as a Science Olympiad coach. She also helped to set eight-grade science standards for the Delaware testing program.

As the 2001 Delaware Teacher of the Year, Marcinkewicz will receive a $10,000 grant, a computer, a gold watch and a special recognition license plate. A panel of educators and community members selects the teacher of the year after portfolio and in-class observations.

“I feel very honored because I know the quality of the other candidates,” said Marcinkewicz.
