Iona College to Host Second Annual "Town Hall
Debate" Oct. 11
Asking "Health Care in America: From Here to Where?"
New Rochelle, NY, October 1, 2002 - Iona College will host its second "Town
Hall Debate" at 5:30 pm on Friday, Oct. 11, at Spellman Hall on
the main campus of the college, located at 715 North Ave. The debate,
co-sponsored by Iona College and Our Lady of Mercy Health Care System
in the Bronx, will consider the question "Health Care in America:
From Here to Where?" and will feature four experts in the medical
field. The event is free and open to the public.
A wide range of issues will be discussed, including rising costs, disease
management, uninsured patients, quality of care, managed care, and providing
medical coverage for the estimated 43 million uninsured United States
residents. Gerard Villucci, vice president of the D'Urso Pavilion, Our
Lady of Mercy Health Care System, will serve as moderator for the event.
The debate will include seven-minute presentations by each of the following
experts, followed by 25 minutes of questions from the audience:
· Sunil S. Jhangiani, MD, MBA, chief of Clinical Nutrition at
Our Lady of Mercy Medical Center and chief of Endoscopy at its Florence
D'Urso Pavilion. Jhangiani is also an assistant professor of Medicine
at New York Medical College and founder of Change Health Care Services,
which streamlines nutrition & digestive health solutions and empowers
patients to take control of their own health. His practice provides quarterly
newsletters and monthly nutrition education classes for the community.
· Joshua Lipsman, MD, Westchester County commissioner of Health.
Lipsman's prior experience includes working as staff physician and community
health director for the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota,
serving as medical director and administrator for the system of public
health clinics in Houston, Texas, and directing the Alexandria, Virginia,
Department of Health for seven and a half years. Lipsman is also a former
executive director of the Gay Men's Health Crisis Center in Manhattan.
· Gail Wilder, MD, Network Medical director for Aetna, Inc. She
was an experienced primary care physician for 15 years before joining
Aetna in 1997. Her responsibilities include promoting positive physician
relations, overseeing network quality initiatives and acting on quality
and policy concerns in addition to ensuring grievance resolution and
compliance with NCQA Standards. She is a founding member of the Westchester
Diabetes Coalition and also serves on the Board of Directors for the
Westchester County Red Cross where she the physician advisor.
· Kenneth S. Abramowitz joined The Carlyle Group in March 2001
as a managing director in the Healthcare Group based in New York. Prior
to joining Carlyle, he spent 23 years as an analyst at Sanford C. Bernstein & Co.
where he covered the medical supply, hospital management and HMO industries,
and was voted top hospital supply and/or service analyst in the Institutional
Investor Magazine "All-America Research Team" 14 out of 19
years since 1980. Over the last decade, he has published 11 major health
care studies and numerous articles in industry publications.
Founded in 1940 by the Congregation of Christian Brothers, Iona College
