Iona College to Host Legal Philosopher and Member
of President's Council on Bioethics Oct. 28
Robert P. George Considers How Reason, Freedom, and the Rule of Law
Can Be Balanced
New Rochelle, NY, Oct. 18, 2002 - Robert P. George, JD, DPhil., professor
of Jurisprudence and director of the James Madison Program in American
Ideals and Institutions at Princeton University, will present "Reason,
Freedom, and the Rule of Law" on Monday, Oct. 28, at 3:30 pm in
Joyce Auditorium on the Iona College campus, located at 715 North Ave.
in New Rochelle. The presentation is free and open to the public.
George, the Jack Rudin & John G. Driscoll Distinguished Visiting
Professor at Iona for the 2002-2003 academic year, is a nationally recognized
expert in the fields of legal and political philosophy, constitutional
law, and civil rights. Recently appointed by President George W. Bush
to the President's Council on Bioethics, he previously served from 1993-98
as a Presidential appointee to the United States Commission on Civil
Rights. The author of numerous articles and three books including the
recent The Clash of Orthodoxies, George is also a former Judicial Fellow
at the Supreme Court of the United States, where he was presented with
the 1990 Justice Tom C. Clark Award. Additionally, he is on the board
of directors for the Ethics and Public Policy Center, The Institute for
American Values, The Institute on Religion and Democracy, The National
Association of Scholars, and the Ethikon Institute for Comparative Ethics.
After George's presentation on Oct. 28, refreshments will be served
to all in attendance. An invitation-only dinner will follow. Free parking
is available on campus.
The Jack Rudin & John G. Driscoll Distinguished Visiting Professorship
at Iona College was established with a grant from Jack '86H, '93H and
Susan Rudin. Invitations are extended each year to one or more outstanding
scholars to serve as visiting professors at Iona. Past honorees have
included Ralph Acampora '63, managing director, Prudential securities;
Don Hewitt, executive producer, 60 Minutes on the CBS television network;
Susan Fisher, professor of Sociology, Wesleyan University; and Benjamin
E. Robinson III, PhD, Chief Privacy Officer, MasterCard International,
Inc.
Founded in 1940 by the Congregation of Christian Brothers, Iona College
