Inaugural Iona College Crossword Puzzle Tournament Set for Nov. 9

Famous Puzzle Constructors to Serve as Judges and Award Prizes

New Rochelle, NY, Oct. 23, 2002 - Iona College will host its inaugural Crossword Puzzle Tournament on Saturday, Nov. 9. The competition, which is open to the public, will take place in Spellman Lounge on the main campus of the college, located at 715 North Ave. in New Rochelle from 9 am to 6 pm.

Registration is $75 or $80 after Nov. 1 and at the door. The entry fee includes a continental breakfast and a tax-deductible donation of $65. Contact Bonnie Sirower at (914) 633-2066 or bsirower@iona.edu, or visit www.iona.edu/advancement/annual/crossword.htm for more information.

Crossword tournament rookies and veterans will compete separately for a variety of awards including cash prizes of up to $300, trophies, or trivia-related prizes. Winners will be named in several categories, including neatest handwriting as well as speed and puzzle accuracy. The tournament is sponsored by Penny Press/Dell Magazines, Random House Puzzles and Games, and the Iona Bookstore, a service of Barnes & Noble. Proceeds from the event will help provide Iona scholarships, library books, classroom supplies and technology, and sponsorship of one or more of 75 student organizations.

Judging for the competition will feature will feature several well-known puzzle constructors including Will Shortz, Nancy Schuster, Maura Jacobson, Jon Delfin, Mimi Raphael, Patti Fitzgerald, Helene Hovanec, and Fred Piscop.

· Shortz is crossword puzzle editor for The New York Times and puzzlemaster for the National Public Radio (NPR) Weekend Edition Sunday. He is also chairman of the World Puzzle Federation, and current director of the World Puzzle Championship/USA; founder and director of the annual American Crossword Puzzle Tournament; and former editor-in-chief of Games Magazine. He recently led a team of puzzlers to the World Crossword Puzzle Championship in Oulu, Finland.

· Schuster, head judge, is a judge at the American Crossword Puzzle Tournament in Stamford, Conn. She retired from her job as editor-in-chief at Dell Champion Crosswords in 1997 and now does test-solving/fact-checking/proofing for the NY Times puzzles. Schuster has also edited four volumes of Crosswords for Dummies. She was recently a member of the USA team for the World Crossword Puzzle Championship in Oulu, Finland.

· Jacobson has created more than 1,000 crosswords for New York Magazine over the past two decades, and is the author of the New York Magazine Crosswords series. She is the only person to contribute a puzzle to every American Crossword Puzzle Tournament since its inception in 1978.

· Delfin has won the American Crossword Puzzle Tournament six times.

· Raphael holds the record for the number of wins in the Senior Division of the American Crossword Tournament.

· Fitzgerald, a 1995 Iona graduate and adjunct in Iona's English Department, is the Crosswords Editor for Penny Press.

· Hovanec, editor for the Iona College Crossword Tournament, recently competed at the World Crossword Puzzle Championship in Oulu, Finland.

· Piscop is Crossword Editor of the Washington Post Magazine, and frequently contributes crossword puzzles to The New York Times and the American Crossword Puzzle Tournament.
