"World in Crisis: Peacemakers Wanted"
Iona College Observes Week of the Peacemaker Nov. 17 - 22
New Rochelle, NY, Nov. 7, 2002 - Iona College will host a week of activities
centered on the topic "World in Crisis: Peacemakers Wanted" in
celebration of The Week of the Peacemaker November 17 - 22. The activities
include a talk by Fr. Daniel Berrigan, a peace activist whose civil disobedience
is depicted in several films; a peace camp for 50 fifth graders from
local schools; an all day teach-in; lectures by experts on peacekeeping
and United States foreign relations; and a dance performance. All events
are open to the public and will take place on the main campus of the
College, located at 715 North Ave. in New Rochelle. Free parking is available
on campus.
The Week of the Peacemaker will begin with a Mass for Peace on Sunday,
November 17 at 7 pm in the Arrigoni Center. Br. John Manyeh of Sierra
Leone, Africa will present "Cry Freetown," an account of his
educational and healing work with child amputees who are victims of that
country's ongoing civil war, on Monday, November 18 at 11:00 am in
the Faculty Reception Room of Spellman Hall.
Also on Monday, November 18, 50 fifth graders from the local community
will serve as ambassadors to their individual schools at a peace camp
from 4 - 7 pm in Spellman Lounge. Iona students will direct the program
entitled "Peacemaking: Ages 1 to 100," which will include skits,
small group discussions, practical steps for resolving daily conflicts
in non-violent ways, and a concert. The peace camp is funded by the Louis
R. Capelli Youth Services Fund.
On Tuesday, November 19, Br. John G. Driscoll, president emeritus of
Iona College and current resident scholar at Hebrew University in Israel,
will deliver a keynote address, "Happy are the Shalom-Makers" at
11 am in Joyce Auditorium.
The following is a schedule of the faculty teach-in scheduled for Wednesday,
November 20 in Spellman Lounge:
· 9 am - "US Relations with Iraq: From the Cold War to
the War on Terrorism" by Dr. Joseph Morgan, CFC, Dept. of History
and Political Science
· 10 am - "A Buddhist Response to Times of Crisis" by
Dr. Brian Brown, Dept. of Religious Studies
· 11 am - "The US News Media as Instruments of War: Contemplating
Peace in the Midst of a Battle Cry" by Dr. Tony Kelso, Dept. of
Mass Communication
· 12 pm - "Greenpeace Movement: A Growing International
and Political Presence" by Dr. Donald Malanga, Dept. of Modern Foreign
Language
· 1 pm - "Terrorism and the Media: What Lessons Can Peacemakers
Learn?" by Dr. John Breslin, Dept. of Mass Communication
· 2 pm - "Trade-Off Between National Security and Civil
Liberties" by Dr. Mary Hagerty, Dept. of History and Political Science
· 3 - 5 pm - "9/11: One Year Later and Beyond"Arts
and Science Multi-disciplinary Panel Presentation with Dr. Dan Smith,
Dept. of History and Political Science; Dr. Anand Shetty, Dept. of Economics;
Dr. Paul Greene, Dept. of Psychology; Dr. Tony Kelso, Dept. of Mass Communication;

· 6 pm - "Practical Steps to Peace: The Work of Peace
Advocacy Groups" by Michael Hovey, executive director of the Hague
Appeal for Peace
· 7:30 pm - Fr. Daniel Berrigan will discuss recent issues
that have developed since September 11, 2001 based on his experience
as a peace activist. Jailed in the 1960s for burning draft cards and
damaging nuclear weapons sites, Fr. Berrigan was one of the "Catonsville
Nine," who broke into a Cantonsville, Maryland draft board and set
fire to classified files in 1968.
Iona students will learn practical methods for peer conflict mediation
during a program on Thursday, November 21 at 11 am in Spellman Lounge.
Dr. Michelle Maidenberg, Dept. of Social Work, will present "Understanding
the Impact of Trauma on Individuals at Various Stages Across the Life
Cycle" from 6 - 7:30 pm that evening in Spellman Lounge.
Also on Thursday, the Iona Council for the Arts, the Office of Student
Development, and the Center for Campus Ministries will present Unique
Voices, Common Language at 8 pm in Joyce Auditorium. Headlining the
performance is the Infinity Dance Theatre, an internationally renowned
company that features both disabled and able-bodied dancers. This celebration
of possibility and diversity also includes performances by Afro-Cuban
percussionist/performance artist Renato Thomas, jazz bassist Tony Cimorosi,
folk singer-songwriter Alex Delfini, Kathak choreographer Parul Shah,
and the Iona Dance Ensemble. Admission is $5. Please call (914) 637-7796
