Iona Gives Students Nearly $1 Million to Spend at
Local Establishments
Meal Cards Good for Use at Seven Merchants in the Partnership
New Rochelle, NY, January 9, 2003 - Iona College announced today
that students will be able to use a portion of their meal cards off campus
beginning with the Fall 2003 semester. The College expects nearly $1
million will be available for food purchases at seven participating merchant
establishments on North Avenue in New Rochelle.
"This is a very exciting initiative both for our students and for the
participating merchants. We are confident that everyone will be delighted
with the program. In addition, this is another opportunity for Iona to
assist New Rochelle in the strengthening of the businesses along North
Avenue," said President James A. Liguori, CFC.
Students will be able to use their meal cards at the A No 1 Pizzeria,
Avenue Deli, Beechmont Tavern, Cannone's Pizzeria, Leo's Deli, Mirage
Diner, and Picasso's Palate. Stephen Sciepura, co-owner of Picasso's
Palate plans to offer a less expensive menu to students using meal cards. "It's
a great idea and a wonderful benefit for us and the students," Steve
Rooney, owner of the Beechmont Tavern said.
Prior to the inception of this plan, students could only use their meal
cards when the cafeteria was open. Now students will be able to eat at
a variety of places long after the cafeteria closes at 7 pm. The meal
cards will have two bar codes, one for on-campus dining and the other
for North Avenue merchant purchases. Iona will supply each merchant with
a Cbord Card Reader and telephone line to process the purchases.
Celebrating 25 years of peace and justice education, Iona College is
a private, co-educational institution of learning in the tradition of
American Catholic higher education founded in 1940 by the Congregation
of Christian Brothers. Iona offers undergraduate degrees in liberal arts,
science, and business administration, as well as Master of Arts, Master
of Science and Master of Business Administration degrees and numerous
post-graduate certificate programs.
