Former Governor Mario Cuomo to Address 'Where America
Stands and Where It's Headed' at 2nd Presidential Leadership Series Feb.

New Rochelle, NY, January 30, 2003 - Mario Cuomo, former New
York governor, will discuss "Where America Stands and Where It's Headed" on
Thursday, Feb. 13 at 7:00 pm in Joyce Auditorium, located across from
Iona's main campus at 715 North Ave. in New Rochelle. The event is the
Second Annual Presidential Leadership Series and is free and open to
the public. Free parking is available on the main campus.
Cuomo, who received an honorary degree from Iona in 1984, is the longest
serving democratic governor of New York and twice set the State's record
for highest popular vote in a state-wide election. Known as an intellectual,
passionate, and challenging force for social responsibility and diversity,
The Boston Globe deemed his recent speech at Harvard a "masterpiece" and
named him the nation's most gifted philosopher-politician.
"Governor Cuomo's powerful oratory and thoroughly considered views should
cause an excitement among supporters and detractors of his ideas, creating
a key element of the collegiate learning experience: dialogue," said
President James A. Liguori, CFC.
Among his many achievements as governor of New York, Cuomo reduced the
annual mortality rate on highways for seven consecutive years with the
nation's first seat belt law and an aggressive anti-drunk driving campaign,
and created the State's first programs such as Child's Health Plus and
Children's Assistance Program, a reform of the New York welfare system
that served as models for later federal programs now in place. He declined
invitations to run for president of the United States and to serve on
the Supreme Court; in 1995, he returned to practicing law at Willkie,
Farr & Gallagher.
Celebrating 25 years of peace and justice education, Iona College is
a private, co-educational institution of learning in the tradition of
American Catholic higher education founded in 1940 by the Congregation
of Christian Brothers. Iona offers undergraduate degrees in liberal arts,
science, and business administration, as well as Master of Arts, Master
of Science and Master of Business Administration degrees and numerous
post-graduate certificate programs.
