Iona College Issues Emergency Preparedness Plan
New Rochelle, NY, February 14, 2003 - Iona College today announced
heightened security measures in response to the federal government's
elevated Homeland Security threat level to condition orange (high). The
announcement followed a meeting of the College's Emergency Preparedness
Task Force during which procedures ensuring the security of students,
faculty and staff were reviewed.
The College has instituted a number of comprehensive heightened security
measures involving various campus departments. They include: increased
Campus Safety and Security patrols on campus; increased monitoring of
all vehicles entering the campus, and enhancing our overall security
posture.
"While the College has not received nor has been alerted to any specific
threats, we want to assure the community that Iona will remain vigilant
in maintaining the highest security measures possible at this time of
heightened national alert," said Charles Carlson, vice provost for Student
Development. "Our students, faculty and staff are encouraged to go about
their normal business, but should be alert and report any suspicious
activity immediately to Campus Safety and Security. All members of the
community should monitor and be guided by any news bulletins or notifications
made by the College."
In the event of an actual emergency, the campus community will be notified
through a variety of means including e-mail, voice mail and our electronic
message board. The College has also taken precautions for responding
to student and campus needs in emergencies.
Students, faculty and staff are reminded to always be alert to conditions
around them, remain calm at all times and report suspicious behavior,
such as unauthorized people in restricted areas and abandoned parcels,
bags, vehicles or other items. Anyone who wishes to report suspicious
activity should contact Campus Safety and Security at 633-2560 (24 hours)
or 633-2245.
