Iona College Announces 2.4 Percent Tuition Increase

Remains Lower than the National Average for Four-year Private Colleges

New Rochelle, NY, March 14, 2003 - Iona College today announced a 2.4 percent tuition increase for the 2003- 04 academic year, raising the cost from $17,325 to $17,750. This increase is lower than the national average for four-year private colleges, which increased by 5.8 percent to $18,2731 in the 2002-03 year. The College also announced a record increase in applicants, up 44 percent from last year.

"Given today's weak economy, we are thrilled to say Iona is able to continue its commitment of providing a quality education while maintaining an affordable price in comparison to other four-year private colleges," said Marie E. Thornton, SSJ, vice president for Finance and Administration.

Tuition will increase two percent, from $530 to $540 per credit, for the Graduate School of Arts and Science, and the Hagan School of Business MBA program, and from $416 to $425, for the Evening/Weekend Program. Additionally, Iona employees will receive a three percent salary increase, which will be absorbed into the overall salary budget and allocated appropriately.

"We have received over 4,000 applications this year and that can be attributed to the educational experience Iona provides at a competitive cost," states Vice Provost for Enrollment Management Thomas Delahunt. The two new residence halls, scheduled to open in August, in addition to Iona's current residence halls, have also enabled the College to increase and expand its recruiting efforts to areas including Boston, Philadelphia, Florida and upstate New York.

The tuition increase will not prohibit Iona from continuing to meet the technological and social needs of its students. The current capital campaign has produced the Iona College Arts Center and the renovation of a science building, and, in the coming years, will enable construction of the LaPenta Student Union, the Hynes Athletics Center, and expansion of the Ryan Library.

Founded in 1940 by the Congregation of Christian Brothers, Iona College is a private, coeducational institution of learning in the tradition of American Catholic higher education. Iona offers undergraduate degrees in liberal arts, science, and business administration, as well as Master of Arts, Master of Science and Master of Business Administration degrees and numerous post-graduate certificate programs. Iona became the first Metro-New York college with a completely wireless Internet campus in September 2001.
