John Mostyn, CFC, the Congregation of Christian
Brothers and Noreen Von Zwehl to Receive Honorary Doctorates at the 59th
Annual Commencement May 17
New Rochelle, NY, May 1, 2003 - The 59th Annual Iona College Commencement
exercises for undergraduate and graduate students will occur Saturday,
May 17 at 10 am on the main campus located at 715 North Avenue in New
Rochelle. James A. Liguori, CFC, president of Iona College, will address
the 700 students receiving bachelor's degrees and the 300 students receiving
master's degrees.
John H. Mostyn, CFC, a 1963 Iona graduate, and the Congregation of Christian
Brothers, Iona's founding order, will receive an honorary Doctor of Humane
Letters degree. Brother Mostyn will be honored for over 40 years of service
in healthcare, education and church leadership. The Congregation of Christian
Brothers, which celebrated its bicentennial in 2002, will also be honored
as a group of men committed to peace, justice and service.
Noreen Von Zwehl, president of the Man Foundation, will also receive
an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree for her devotion to the materially
poor worldwide. Von Zwehl has supported projects that include the construction
of over 20 churches, convents, schools and medical facilities in Vietnam,
China, and the United States. Russian orphans with minor handicaps have
been adopted by American parents through the Man Foundation's Second
Chance project, while single mothers and their infants have received
physical, educational and spiritual support at "Momma's House" on
Long Island. Von Zwehl will also help fund the construction of a church
in Vietnam that will be dedicated in honor of the 15 Iona alumni who
died in the World Trade Center attacks on September 11, 2001.
Founded in 1940 by the Congregation of Christian Brothers, Iona College
is a private, coeducational institution of learning in the tradition
of American Catholic higher education. Iona offers undergraduate degrees
in liberal arts, science, and business administration, as well as Master
of Arts, Master of Science and Master of Business Administration degrees
and numerous post-graduate certificate programs.
