Iona's Commitment to Standards Set Forth in Education Reform is Affirmed With National Accreditation

New Rochelle, NY - The Iona College Department of Education today announced its accreditation by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) for its undergraduate and graduate degree programs. The College is one out of only five institutions in the New York metropolitan area with NCATE accreditation.

National accreditation aligns Iona's Education Department with the standard set forth in the No Child Left Behind Act that teacher quality is a high priority. "We sought NCATE accreditation rather than NY State Board of Regents accreditation because it is the premier accrediting organization for teacher training institutions," said Dr. Patricia Antonacci, chair of Iona's Education Department.

In order to obtain NCATE accreditation, Iona's education program had to prove it met six criterion, including providing partnerships with p-12 schools for the development and enhancement of teacher candidate skills, carefully assessing candidate knowledge and skills to determine degree conferral, and enabling candidates with the resources, including information technology, necessary for the preparation of today's teachers.

Iona offers bachelor of science degrees in early childhood education (birth - grade 2) and childhood education (grades 1-6), and certification in adolescence education (grades 7-12). Master of science degrees in teaching (MST) are offered for childhood education (birth-grade 2), elementary education (grades 1-6) and adolescence education (grades 7-12). Master of science degrees in education (MSEd) are offered in elementary education with a specialization in science, multicultural education, school administration and supervision, and in secondary school subjects. Iona also offers an independent teacher certification option in secondary school subjects. For further information visit www.iona.edu/academic/artsscience/departments/education..

The Education Department is the fourth program at Iona to obtain national accreditation. The Department of Mass Communication is accredited by the Accrediting Council on Education in Journalism and Mass Communications (ACEJMC), the Hagan School of Business holds AACSB accreditation by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business and the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) accredited Iona's Social Work Department last fall.

The Education Department of Iona College is accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE), 12010 Mass Ave, NW Suite 500, Washington, DC 20036, phone: 202/466-7496. This accreditation covers initial teacher preparation Programs and advanced educator preparation programs. NCATE is recognized by the US Department of Education and the Council for Higher Ed Accreditation to accredit programs for the preparation of teachers and other professional school personnel.

Celebrating 200 years of Christian Brothers Education, Iona College is a private, co-educational institution of learning in the tradition of American Catholic higher education. Iona offers undergraduate degrees in liberal arts, science, and business administration, as well as master of arts, master of science and master of business administration degrees and numerous post-graduate certificate programs.
