Senator Schumer to Offer Congratulatory Remarks
New Rochelle, NY - The 60th Annual Iona College Commencement exercises for undergraduate and graduate students will occur Saturday, May 15 at 10 am on the main campus located at 715 North Ave. in New Rochelle. Bernard Kerik, former New York Police Department commissioner and former interim minister of the Interior and senior policy adviser to the U.S. Presidential Envoy in Iraq, will offer a commencement address. US Senator Charles Schumer (D-NY) will offer congratulatory remarks to the 700 students receiving bachelor's degrees and the 300 students receiving master's degrees.
Kerik will also receive an honorary Doctor of Laws degree for his valuable service in streamlining law enforcement institutions and for his triumph over adversity in his personal and professional life.
The College will also grant an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters to Thomas Hales (Iona Class of 1958), chairman, president and chief executive officer of U.S.B. Holding Company, and to Alice Hales for their tremendous philanthropic contributions, particularly in the healthcare field. Alfred Alasia, former head of the film department at the Television Workshop of New York and inventor of Scrambled Indicia, the technology that creates images invisible to the naked eye used to thwart counterfeiting, will receive an honorary baccalaureate degree. Alasia was a freshman at Iona in 1943, but was drafted to World War II and did not complete his degree.
Celebrating 200 years of Christian Brothers Education, Iona College is a private, co-educational institution of learning in the tradition of American Catholic higher education. Iona offers undergraduate degrees in liberal arts, science, and business administration, as well as master of arts, master of science and master of business administration degrees and numerous post-graduate certificate programs.
