Honors Student Interns at RNC with The Washington Center

New Rochelle, NY - Iona honors student and history major Peter Kollman was selected among 175 college students nationwide to be a Campaign 2004 participant at the Republican National Convention (RNC) with The Washington Center, an independent nonprofit organization providing internship programs and academic seminars for qualified college students. As part of the National Political Conventions Seminar program, Kollmann completed a two-week course in Manahattan to prepare for the RNC and then, equipped with a subway pass and press credentials permitting him to enter Madison Square Garden, he observed the RNC via his fieldwork placement with The Cox Newspapers, a national publisher of 17 daily newspapers, including The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Kollmann, as part of his assignment, was required to interview six people at the RNC. He spoke with Senator Chuck Hagel (Republican - Nebraska), NBC's Tom Brokaw and obtained an exclusive interview with Bob Schieffer, anchor of CBS's Sunday morning commentary "Face the Nation."

"I did not attend this seminar to be informed about the RNC, but rather to be educated about it and to think critically and analytically about what happens behind the scenes at this seminal event in American politics. Conventions are really like 'Political Disneylands' where all of one's political dreams come true," said Kollmann.

Holding a 4.0 grade point average, Kollmann is a junior at Iona and is also the news and copy editor of The Ionian, the College's student newspaper. The program fee for the two-week seminar was $3,000 and, because Kollmann's was awarded the American Express Research Grant by the Iona Honors Program, all but $500 was covered.

Founded in 1940 by the Congregation of Christian Brothers, Iona College is a private, coeducational institution of learning in the tradition of American Catholic higher education. Iona offers undergraduate degrees in liberal arts, science and business administration, as well as master of arts, master of science and master of business administration degrees and numerous post-graduate certificate programs.
