Center for Campus Ministries Organizes Sept 11 Remembrance
Day
New Rochelle, NY - The Iona College Center for Campus Ministries will
sponsor opportunities for prayer, reflection and service in remembrance
of the third anniversary of the national tragedies that occurred on September
11. The College's campus chapter of Habitat for Humanity will participate
in a weeklong build-a-thon and volunteers will meet at 8 am at Montgomery
House and depart for Porasch St. in Yonkers where Habitat is completing
the construction of four houses.
A prayer service will take place at 1 pm in time in the small park to the
right of the College's main entrance where a memorial monument stands in honor
of Iona's 15 alumni who were killed in the World Trade Center attacks. The
Iona bagpipe band and Arrigoni choir will participate in the service which
is open to the public. Please call 633-2632 for more information.
The monument, constructed of brass on a marble base, was made possible by
donations from the Iona College Class of 2002 and from part of the proceeds
of the 2002 Trustee Award Dinner Dance. That event attracted more than 700
supporters and raised more than $700,000, with net proceeds providing for
the permanent, on-campus memorial and full Iona College scholarships for the
26 children - at the time of the attacks, ranging in age from six months to
23 years - of the victims.
Founded in 1940 by the Congregation of Christian Brothers, Iona College is
a private, coeducational institution of learning in the tradition of American
Catholic higher education. Iona offers undergraduate degrees in liberal arts,
science and business administration, as well as master of arts, master of
science and master of business administration degrees and numerous post-graduate
certificate programs.
