Tony Vaccaro: The World Trade Center, A Personal Photographic
Journal
on Display Until Dec. 10
New Rochelle, NY - The Iona College and New Rochelle Councils on the Arts
present the work of a world-renowned photographer with a new exhibition
at the Iona College Arts Center. Tony Vaccaro: The World Trade Center,
A Personal Photographic Journal will run through Friday, December 10.
The exhibit features approximately 60 photographs in color and black and
white, many of which have never been seen before. Vaccaro was a personal
friend of the chief architect of the WTC, Monoru Yamasaki. His photographs
span the early days of the World Trade Center's construction to its eventual
devastation.
The show also includes a video component produced by Nancy Jo Johnson, PhD,
an Iona professor in the Mass Communication Department. Stacey Temple, administrative
coordinator for the Council, said, "Tony's photojournalistic style is a wonderful
way of seeing the history of events. The World Trade Center is part of history
now too, and the exhibition is a way of preserving its whole story, not just
its demise."
Vaccaro attended high school in New Rochelle, and bought his first camera
here. He took combat photographs during World War II, including the D-Day
landing at Normandy. He served as a photographer for The Stars and Stripes
until 1949. Vaccaro went on to work for many magazines including Flair, Life,
and Time. During these years, he won international acclaim for his creative
and technical innovations in photojournalism and fashion photography. Vaccaro
became known for his portraits of famous personalities like Marlon Brando,
Charlie Chaplin, Marlene Dietrich, Federico Fellini, Georgia O'Keefe, Frank
Lloyd Wright and many others.
Vaccaro's book, Enter Germany, was published in March 2001. His works are
in collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the National
Archives in Washington, DC, the Musee National d'Art Moderne at the Centre
Georges Pompidou in Paris and other museums, and private collections worldwide.
