Driven to Abstraction An Exhibition of Works by Members
of the American Society of Contemporary Artists on Display Jan. 18 - Feb. 24
New Rochelle, NY - Driven to Abstraction, an exhibition of works
by selected members of the American Society of Contemporary Artists, will
be on exhibit in the Brother Chapman Gallery, Iona College, located at
715 North Ave. from January 18 through February 24. An opening reception
will take place from 2 to 5 pm on Sunday, January 23. This event is free
and open to the public.
Featured artists include Stephen Beveridge, recipient of an Award of Excellence
from Manhattan Arts International magazine; Frank Mann, whose works can be
found in the Guggenheim Museum and numerous collections throughout the world
and is listed in "2000 Outstanding Artists and Designers of the 20th Century;" and,
Frank Terna, an artist, painter and lecturer whose works are largely based
on his experience in Nazi concentration campus during World War II and are
in a variety of collections including the Smithsonian Institute in Washington,
D.C.
The American Society of Contemporary Artists began over 85 years ago, initially
as the Brooklyn Society of Artists, when a group of 44 artists came together
to create an exhibiting organization dedicated to broadening opportunities
for artists to display their work. This national organization currently has
nearly 100 active members who are selected by a peer review panel. Throughout
its history, acclaimed modernists of the Society have included Adolph Gottlieb,
Chaim Gross and William Zorach.
Driven to Abstraction is sponsored by the Iona College Council on the Arts
with an endowment from the Baron Lambert Fund for the Arts through the generosity
of JoAnn and Joseph Murphy. The Gallery is open 12 - 5 pm Monday - Wednesday,
12 - 5 pm and 6:30 - 8 pm Thursday, and 2 - 5 pm Sunday. The Gallery

Founded in 1940 by the Congregation of Christian Brothers, Iona College is
