Tim Russert to Address the Class of 2005 at Madison Square Garden Theater May 22

Cardinal Egan and Russert to Receive Honorary Doctorates

New Rochelle, NY - The 61st Annual Iona College Commencement exercises for undergraduate and graduate students will occur Sunday, May 22 at 6 pm in the theater at Madison Square Garden in New York City. Tim Russert, managing editor and moderator of NBC’s Meet the Press, will receive an honorary doctorate and address the 700 students receiving bachelor’s degrees and the 300 students receiving master’s degrees. Cardinal Edward Egan, archbishop of New York, will also receive an honorary doctorate at the ceremony.

Named “America’s best interviewer” by Reader’s Digest in 2004, Meet the Press has become the most referenced news program in the world since Russert (pictured below) joined the show in 1991.

He is also the political analyst for NBC Nightly News and the Today program, anchor of The Tim Russert Show, and serves as senior vice president and Washington bureau chief of NBC News. Author of the number one New York Times Best Seller Big Russ & Me, Russert is also a trustee of the Freedom Forum’s Newseum and a member of the Greater Washington Boys and Girls Club and America’s Promise – Alliance for Youth boards of directors.

Pope John Paul II appointed Edward Egan archbishop of New York in 2000. Since that time, Cardinal Egan has joined the Boards of Trustees of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, D.C., and the Ratisbonne Institute in Jerusalem. Cardinal Egan was elevated to the College of Cardinals in 2001 and has been appointed to the following institutions of the Vatican: The Supreme Tribunal of the Apostolic Signatura, the Pontifical Council for the Family, the Prefecture for the Economic Affairs of the Holy See, the Council of Cardinals for the Study of the Organizational and Economic Concerns of the Holy See, and the Permanent Commission for the Protection of the Historic and Artistic Patrimony of the Holy See.
