Iona College Mourns the Death of Pope John Paul II

A Mass Celebrating the Holy Father’s Life to Occur at 12 pm April 5

New Rochelle, NY - The entire Iona College community is deeply saddened by the death of Pope John Paul II, one of the greatest champions for world peace in the 20th Century. The College joins the world in prayer for the Holy Father and for the Catholic Church as it prepares to name a new Pontiff in the coming weeks. “The Church and the world have lost an extraordinarily good and holy leader.  We will ever be grateful for Pope John Paul II’s wisdom, his strong moral direction, and his love for and belief in young people,” said Brother James A. Liguori, president of Iona College.

The Office of Campus Ministries, in addition to several prayer services in the residence halls and the weekly Sunday Mass, will offer a Mass celebrating Pope John Paul’s life at 12 pm on Tuesday, April 5 at the ginkgo tree in the campus quad. Iona, founded in 1940 by the Congregation of Christian Brothers, will remember a man deeply dedicated to Catholic education who taught the world’s youth the importance of living ethically and socially responsible lives.
