Iona to Honor President Br. James A. Liguori at Reunion Gala June 11

New Rochelle, NY - Iona College President Brother James A. Liguori, Ed.D. will receive the Brother William B. Cornelia Founder’s Award for Outstanding Service to the College at the Reunion Weekend Gala June 11. The award, named for Iona’s founding president, represents the Alumni Association’s appreciation for Br. Liguori’s tremendous commitment to Iona since he graduated in 1965.

Appointed the seventh president of Iona in January 1995, Br. Liguori developed and implemented the Presidential Strategic Plan, leading the College to remarkable physical and academic transformations. Since his arrival, Iona raised over $82 million for Vision into Reality, the campus capital campaign, to complete building projects that include the Iona College Arts Center (opened in October 2000), renovations of the science building and the Mulcahy Campus Events Center, a new main entrance, an endowment for more than 23 scholarship funds and, most recently, the Robert V. LaPenta Student Union (scheduled to open August 2005) and the Hynes Athletics Center (scheduled to open January 2006). The College also opened two new residence halls in 2003.

Currently in his eleventh year as Iona’s president, Br. Liguori welcomed students returning for the 2004-05 academic year with the news that Iona has been listed in Princeton Review’s Best Northeastern Colleges and among the top schools in the North according to US News and World Report’s 18th Annual “America’s Best Colleges 2005.” The Hagan School of Business is also one of the nation’s most outstanding business schools, according to The Princeton Review and is featured in the “Best 143 Business Schools” 2005 edition.

The Reunion Gala, celebrating alumni from the classes of 1945, ’50, ’55, ’60, ’65, ’70, ’75, ’80, ’85, ’90, ’95, and 2000, will also recognize several additional dedicated Iona alumni. John Beyrer, Ed.D. ’61 will receive the Doyle Award for distinguished service to the Alumni Association; past and present student leaders of Campus Ministries will receive the Driscoll Award for heroic humanitarian service; and John Kelly ’60, Edward Filardi, Esq. ’65 and Raymond Sozzi ’65 will receive the Loftus Award for outstanding achievement.
