Tim Russert Inspires and Challenges Graduates at 61st Annual Commencement Ceremony

Cardinal Egan Proud to be an Honorary Member of Iona’s Class of 2005

New Rochelle, NY – “Congratulations. You finally made it,” said Tim Russert, managing editor and moderator of NBC’s Meet the Press, as he addressed the crowd of 5,000 in the Theater of Madison Square Garden and asked the graduates to stand and thank their parents, mentors and friends. Russert, who also received an honorary doctorate, urged the graduates to “remember the people struggling” and cited a favorite phrase ‘No exercise is better for the human heart than reaching down and lifting someone else up.’ “That is your charge. That is your challenge. That is your opportunity. Know that your family, your values and your Iona education have prepared you for this,” he said.

Cardinal Edward Egan, archbishop of New York, also received an honorary doctorate at the ceremony and offered celebratory remarks to the graduates. “The Christian Brothers institutions are one of the Archdiocese of New York’s greatest treasures and I am delighted to now be a member of the Iona family and a fellow classmate of Tim Russert’s,” said Cardinal Egan. He also highlighted the recent achievements at Iona under the leadership of President Brother James A. Liguori, including the numerous campus building projects made possible by the College’s recently completed $82 million capital campaign and concluded that “Iona is extraordinary and graduates leave the College with a superb education.”
